If I was planning to use my 848 on track only, what are the best ways to take weight from it. And also cost effective ones if at all possible. Or is it just a waste of time for the potential gain in power to weight ?
Obviously you'll loose weight from the lights to start with. What chain are you running? Are still on the original sprockets? Lightwight battery? Light weight subframe front and back would be good. Lights are off, did chain, renthal qr carrier, 40t rear 14t front. My track body work is OEM panels, not sure how much lighter true race fairings are ?
there's a BIG saving to be had on the battery. not sure of the weight of an 848 battery, but my std 916 battery was about 5kg - the replacement was 970g
I think the sky's the limit if you have the cash....as with all these things. I guess its about bang for your buck really. Would a carbon/ally tank be a big saving? The standard fairings arent massively heavy but you might save a couple of kilos if you went for track ones....especially if you went kevlar etc. Lighter wheels would probably make the biggest difference in terms of weight and handling
@MrAliT The sky isn't the limit for my wallet unfortunately ! So I think that's the point what are the top 5 weight for cost mods then. Wheels would be nice but that's a big outlay......... But I'm not sure what that would save in weight........ I suppose that is the question does anyone have any exact weight comparisons between oem bodywork and track, OEM 848 wheels and aftermarket etc etc.
If you want to go faster, I expect the best money spent is on training. Not as bling but it'll make you faster everywhere
^^^ oh yeah completely agree, the 2 sessions I've had on track of training have transformed my riding. But............I need to tinker with something in the garage over the winter to keep me out of trouble ! Found these wheel weights from a usa ducati site. 848 OEM Marchesini Brembo Wheels (Cast) (mine are Enkei........... ) 848 Ducati Performance Aluminum Marchesini Wheels (Forged) 848 BST Carbon 7 Spoke Wheels (Carbon) Cast - Front 9.15 lbs Rear 9.85 lbs Total 19.0 lbs Forged - Front 6.85 lbs Rear 7.40 lbs Total 14.25 lbs -4.75 lbs from stock wheel weight Carbon - Front 6.10 lbs Rear 5.90 lbs Total 12.0 lbs -7.0 lbs from stock wheel weight 1098S Stock wheel Rear 7.85 Lbs 1098S Stock wheel Front 7.00 Lbs 1098/1198 Forged Marchesini MAG wheel Rear 6.90 Lbs 1098/1198 Forged Marchesini wheel Front 6.30 Lbs 1098/1198 Dymag Carbon Rear 6.65 lbs 1098/1198 Dymag Carbon Front 5.50 lbs BST Black Mamba Rear 7 straight spokes 2.71 kg 5.97 lbs BST Black Mamba Front 7 straight spokes 2.49 kg 5.48 lbs Thanks to OZ Ducati for the BST weights 848 stock rear wheel 9.60 lbs 848 Stock front wheel 9.20 lbs
so in a concise form cast 848 Marchesini vs BST carbon are a 3kg saving but with of course the other benefits that lighter wheels bring. So 4kg on a battery, 3kg on wheels .............
So if you went for BST's you'd loose over 13.5kg from the standard 848 wheels? Thats a lot of weight but a lot of money and not much fidding time....just fit them. Maybe buy some cheap track fairings and paint/wrap them....that should keep you busy. Or buy a cat and give it a nightly bath...that would while away those cold evenings too
I didnt show my workings Standard 848 - 18.8 kg for both wheels BST - 5.2kg for both wheels 18.8-5.2 = 13.6kg
