Carby Clip-ons Vs Ie Clip-ons

Discussion in 'Supersport (1974-2007)' started by Loz, Oct 28, 2014.

  1. Apologies if this has been thrashed out before, I didn't find it in the Search.

Can anyone describe to me the difference between clip-ons for these two types of SS?

I believe that the carby SS clip-ons mount below the upper yoke and so will have a taller rise in them compared to the later IE models. Is this the case? Would there be any pitfalls I'd need to avoid if using carby clip-ons on an IE SS?

Reason for the post: I'm hoping to use ST2 forks on my 2001 750SS, the forks are around 5cm shorter than the original ones. I'm prepared to waste any amount of money in order to save spending money so obviously I will get myself into these scrapes.

  2. Would you like some dimensions for the carbed versions or does this help?

The top of the clamp is approx 10mm down from the underside of the yoke.

  3. The pic is very helpful, Al. Thank you.

I'm guessing the clip-on picture is the standard fitment. Looks doable. What type of fork is that? looks Ohlins-y to me but I am usually wrong about stuff.

  7. Standard / OEM clip-on.

The forks are the OEM non-adjustable Marzocchis with the big nut on top.

I now have fully adjustable Showas, fitted, though.

  8. Ah, thanks. The gold colour fooled me, my Marzocchis are silver.

I'm hoping the carb clip-ons have more "rise" in them, compared to the IE clip-ons. This may get me past the issue with the ST2 forks being 50mm shorter than the OEM Marzocchis. I'd do some measuring except that I don't have the bike handy right now.

  9. I've just locked up my workshop (large shed) and I'm frightened of the dark anyway, so I'm not going out there again until tomorrow.

But if that is approx 10mm between the clip-on and the yoke, as a rough guide you can reckon on the rise between the top of the clamp and the underside of the handlebar bit being roughly 50mm (Where the weld joins the horizontal to the upright).......

Don't forget that the bar angles downwards towards the outside.....
