749 identity...

Discussion in '749 / 999' started by yets, Aug 6, 2012.

  1. Purchased a 749 on Saturday and was just wondering about it's identity. It's (what I was told) a 2003 Monoposto Base 749. Does anybody know what extras if any came included with that model? I've looked up the differences between S and R models and I just wanted to be clear about what suspension, dampers came with them. All my registration sheets/MOTs say it's an S but there isn't any visual signs that it is....

  2. My reg doc says 999 S. But it isn't. It's a standard Bip.

Have you got an Ohlins on the rear?

  3. Yep, Ohlins front and rear and steering damper.

  4. I've just tried copying and pasting a link from wiki (external links) but for reasons I'm unsure of it/my computer won't let me??

Base model: Showa front Sachs rear 425 lbs

S model: Showa front (nitride) Showa rear 410 lbs??

    Google etc hth ...

  5. That's R spec!!

Any history? Written off/rebuilt?? Blinged up is my best guess.

  6. I checked Google and it said that it was R so I'm very confused.

It has carbon rear mudguard too which I thought was R spec, so I'm confused as to why it would be an S. I thought maybe because it was 2003 things were different from the face-lifted 2004 onwards models.

    History appears to be clear...

  7. Hmmm, the plot thickens - curious! Matching numbers obviously? Someone's done some hardcore blinging!! No termi tho! Whats it GO like?

    Ah, just a thought, stickers????

  8. Did the Rs have carbon fairings? If so, and it has, I'd be surprised if anyone had blinged up a standard 749 to that spec - seeing the expense.

  9. Its not a R.

If it were, it would have mag heads and a different swinger to name just a few differences.

I dont think its an S either but I would put my hard earned on it being a converted BIP (to solo) with Ohlins stickers on the shocks and damper which would also go with what you were told - its a BIP.

A carbon hugger is just aftermarket along with the tax disk holder and screen.

If you want to really learn about them maybe hook up with a few other owners on here and have a "show & tell"?

    Where abouts are you based??

    Oh and stickers!

    Ohlins

  12. He hasn't said he's going to sell it just because it's a base 749!

Anyway, as Promised here are the photos for the fuel pipe. You should be able to see where the recesses are in the first shot....

  14. Just a few points to confirm the model.

2003 came with grey swing arm ..... So you do have a 2003.

Base model had fixed foot peg mounting points, while the S model had multiple foot peg mounting points to give some adjustment.

Carbon guards front and rear, ohlins (or ohlin stickers) are all bits added by previous owners.

  15. If you still need to know phone Ducati UK with chassis no and ask them to text you back with details.

  16. Yep its a base 749 fitted with a monoposto rear, forks and shock look to be std with ohlins stickers. If it has a light switch above the starter button its a 03 MY (model year).

  17. Nah, I don't need to know anymore but thanks guys. I was sold a base and was told it was a base so just a bit iffy seeing all those weird bits on it and then having all the reg say it was a S.

I see what you mean. Is it something that I could sort myself? I need to get my hands on a service manual...

  18. Just to explain: it's the difference between

"I have a nice exhaust for sale to make it sound like its going even faster in the classifieds" - make bike go fast in the classifieds

    and

"I have a nice exhaust for sale in the classifieds to make it sound like its going even faster" - exhaust in the classifieds, bike going fast.

    Geddit??

    Grammar, innit?

  19. Its an easy thing.

If it wont just push over (if the bolts are in the way) then its a case of removing the two blots and handles either side of the seat and then the two bolts under the seat unit holding the seat unit to the tabs on the subframe. Then pop the mono seat unit up at the very end (there is a spigot and rubber grommet underneath) and lift the seat/ mono unit up so that you can poke the fuel lines over. Best grip the seat and not the mono tail to avoid damage as its pulling off the subframe locating rails.

Thats it, reverse to finish up and your done.:upyeah:

Best done without much fuel in the tank as the tank & seat unit are joined.

I hope my grammar was ok for you all (sarcasm)
