Hi guys, I've only ever posted on here a few times but thought this might be of some use to people in the northwest. I have an 1198s with slash cut termis/filter and re-flashed ecu, these were all on the bike when I purchased it last yr. To cut a long story short it ran like a dog below 3500rpm and popped and banged on overrun. Lots of people told me this was just how they run, including a ducati main dealer. A couple of weeks ago I put the Bike into Moto-r in Ruthin, North Wales for service work and fork seals ( the owner is ex ducati Abergele mechanic and employs another ex ducati mechanic) I had various recommendations for them for ducati owners locally. Anyway Richard the owner did the service work and rode the bike. He called me to say it definitely shouldn't be running like that! Richard manually set the ecu up by adjusting and re riding the bike. He did it 7 times and set the co to 5%. The bike now holds constant throttle at 2000rpm and pulls cleanly to the redline, it's much smoother too. I know this isn't a custom tune on a dyno but I wasn't really interested in the power gains as I can't use the full power on the road, the bike is just too much. But as far as sorting the fuelling out for £60 by the most knowledgable ducati mechanic I've ever spoken to I thought was good value.
Take it to @CJS at Lougi Moto in Clutton nr Bristol and get 170bhp and 97ft/lbs at the rear wheel and a great big grin on your face. Its an all day job and £456 well spent. Best £ ive spent on my 1198 by a country mile. Ive got a new bike since.
Thanks matt, not sure I have much to offer as I'm new to ducati but I've read lots on here and the forums great! Nelson - yes the bike was very lean low down and too rich further up. It's now a different bike all together - I will miss the popping and banging on over run though! Bootsam - I spoke to Chris at cjs and also john burrows at jhp in Coventry. I was planning on having it mapped at jhp as it was around £300 there and much closer. When Richard at Moto-r said he could look at at manually I though it would be a pointless task but it rides brilliantly now. I honestly never though I would say it but I just don't need the extra power a tune would give. I took the bike into Wales this year with my mate on his zx10r. We had a great time but were hitting silly, and I mean silly silly triple speed digits. When I got home I thought about what would've happened if we got caught! I would been preparing myself not to bend over to pick he soap up! The bikes beautiful but pointless below 80-90mph! I have an older gsxr750 I go touring to europe every year on and I'm going to flog it and try and get a multi strada in the hope it may make a little more sense!!!
im having the same sort of problem myself, have a 1198 with full termi system, air filter and race ecu, had it at a ducati pro a few times, it goes poor below 4k and will not idle slower than about 1600 rpm, has had throttle body's balanced and tps reset, after 4 its a complete animal, wish i could smooth her out a touch down low thoe
Take her to @CJS @mcconnellnc30nc35 I had the same issue. Chris transformed my bike below 3k. It was a pig but now its sweet. Plus I got 170 at the back wheel.
Chris at CJS did my bag of bits odd bod 1037. Went from snatchy and not fun with a power commander to smooth and flat out fast by dropping the PC3 and programming the ECU. Can't recommend him enough.
@bootsam Don't want to ignite a "downhill dyno" or "felt-pen/crayon" discussion, but that does sound a lot at the wheel! ompus:
I have seen a 1098R graph at CJS with over 190 wheel hp. I hope his dyno doesn't read high cos my bike only showed 150 :Nailbiting:
I've said it before, and will say it again. I'd much rather a 1098R over a panigale. All that top end power but with a fat midrange and torque of a tractor too. A perfect V2. I guess the 1199 dash is nice though.
Yh, I've heard the torque of even a standard one is enough to catch you out if not awake. Tuned ones are just an accident looking for a place to happen. But how high on the priority list of a Ducati buyer is 'easy of use' And let's face it, a 1098 could win in WSB and the 1199, erm, how can I be polite to my favourite manufacturer, hasn't done as well shall we say.
Whether or not the dyno provides a true reading is neither here nor there. My bike feels better in the range that I use. I admit I dont use the top end bits. I never put it into CJS for more power. I put it in to sort out my low down fuelling which has been done. Anything else is a bonus although the 170 figure is nice to stick under 1 friends nose in particular in the spirit of banter. I also sorted out my clutch which was annoying me. Turns out the centre nut had come loose. I undid it with my fingers! Took 0.5mm off too and my bike now feels superb. Roll on sunny winter days like Saturday (until the salt goes down).
Agreed. I had my 1098R dynoed a couple of years back and got 190.3 rwbhp. After a recent engine and gearbox rebuild by Moto Rapido and dyno set up by Wilf, we were getting 181rwbhp. An apparent drop of 9hp. When I got the bike to Donington for a shake down, my botty dyno told me it was stronger and harder charging than ever......... Cue the red/blue crayon debate..... But for sure, a dyno set up with a skilled operator is money well spent! My recent rebuild cost a pretty penny but by Christ, what a stonking motor!
It certainly takes a highly skilled rider to get the best out of a 1098R. Which isn't me by the way. But that doesn't stop them being 'laugh out loud in your lid' fun for us mere mortals. A very involving bike.
Wilfs is notoriously low. Bikes have left there with 192hp, been transported a few miles north and landed with 214....my gixer was done on same dyno so its really 190, not 168
