  1. Put the miles in. You ain't gonna learn nothing if you don't ride the sodding thing.

  2. The best ones probably are the road raft/bikesafe ones. It's not about the training it's about the attitude of some towards those who just don't fancy it

Not aimed at anyone in particular.

And I'm unusual as I always like to learn ;)

  3. Again, the point of training isn't to make you a better rider than someone else its to make you a better rider than you were before.
And you're right Figaro. You do need to do the miles. Or as my instructor put it, you need TITS: time in the saddle.

  4. I'm always right;)

  5. @andyb

I am sure that the courses you do are very good but the mistake you make is to assume that the only way to achieve a high standard is to have done those courses.

I am a firm believer in Roadcraft, which probably covers most if not all of the common scenarios likely to be encountered on the road and also touches upon some of the behavioural aspects that you rightly point out.

Those last few percentage points of performance come from constant repetition, practice and scrutiny, which as serving members of plod you no doubt get.

I speed, regularly, like most here, and I consider myself a safe rider.

The idea that you can only speed safely if you have done the courses is ridiculous.

  6. I am not so sure that being a serving plod is any better experience than eg a dispatch rider... from what I can see most of them spend all day riding around with their heads up their own arse thinking about how clever they are .. not the ideal learning experience.

  7. Andy it's even more fun on the outside, quite eye opening without the blinkers on.

  8. I'm paying for training to make me better than others. It better work!!

  9. did you fall or was you pushed???

  10. this is exactly my point .......you dont know you dont know, because you dont know!

  11. Andy Andy Andy every time I push your buttons to how blinded you are and how defensive you are with your continued misplaced loyalty you always come back with the same retort. I have explained to you so many times my rationale for LEAVING that I don't need to again. I know that in the insular world you must inhabit people only get pushed, trust me there is more to life and the world than processing people, handing out tickets etc etc.
my life is inexorably happier with more love and laughter and with considerably less stress than it ever was after 14 yrs as a cop. I only hope that when you hang your collars up you find the peace you so deserve. All the best, Oh and I left of my own free will. Ok :upyeah:

  12. Boobies :Wideyed:

  13. Beware over operating brakes incase engine stalls

  14. no I don't think it is an ideal learning experience, but if you think that it is,, well ok by me..

  15. Ive outrun a couple of police bmw bikes on a vespa back in the day. They should have been sent on the course.

(they got me later on though)

  16. I'm expecting a reply along the lines of they let you go as it wasn't safe, was procedure or some other dibble drivel as to why you would have got away...

  17. More like local knowledge of alleyways on the estate etc, Muddy parks and I can get a Vespa under a barrier.

  18. Nowadays they'll find you with thermal imaging and under the European arrest warrant they'll probably be allowed to shoot you from a helicopter. Dangerous things, Vespas.

  20. I only went out to get a couple of yorkie bars from the petrol station. Ended up with a police chase. (I had no lights). Chased round estate for an hour or so before I abandoned vehicle in a tucked up and out of the way place and proceeded to ex girlfriends via back gardens. Hour later theres a knock on door. Plod. With an Alsatian. Bollocks. That will teach me for having a furry tigerskin seat cover.
