  2. North, South, West & East Yorkshire (none of that humberside bollocks thank you) are already an independent state, it's just that the rest of you hav'nt figured it out yet.

Education must be so much better up north.....punctuation and spelling can't be on the syllabus in Norwich!

  7. I dont plough fields only women. And I didnt realize this was a forum on grammer. If it is then there isnt a thread on this site that would pass english SATS. Unless anyone is an English teacher im fairly confident that we all are guilty of some errors. dis aint a job intavue so il rite how i lik

  8. And on that note....I rest my case!

  9. Haha love it:upyeah:

  10. If we are being picky, you shouldn't start a sentence with the word And.......:upyeah:

  11. As a Norfolk boy all my life ( 50 years ), it pains me to read these mickey taking threads ( not ), I was grammar school educated ( didn't do me any favours ), was just starting to feel good about my county and then what..... Delia bloody Smith goes and spoils it all....sob,sob,sob!

  12. Move with the times partner

In the past, English teachers used to preach that one should never start a sentence with conjunctions like and or but. Does this rule still apply today?
Not entirely. It is already acceptable to start sentences with such conjunctions. Some authorities, in fact, even defend that for some cases conjunctions will do a better job than more formal constructions. Here is a quotation from Ernest Gowers addressing the usage of and on the beginning of sentences:
That it is a solecism to begin a sentence with and is a faintly lingering superstition. The OED gives examples ranging from the 10th to the 19th c.; the Bible is full of them.

  13. Lol!

  14. Spelling and Grammar are two different things, a sentence can be grammatically correct but poorly spelled similarly the spelling could be beyond reproach but the construction of the piece could be incorrect.

  15. Back on topic however....

If Yorkshire was a country ......... they'd be completely bloody intolerable

  16. Anyone would think I was actually from yorkshire, but alas I'm not.

My quip was actually with the punctuation or lack of and spelling, not the grammar, all be it tongue in cheek, as I myself am not particularly well educated either.

Had I been educated well, I'd be the one with the law degree not my offspring. :upyeah:

  17. Thanks for the feedback. To wrongs don’t make a write.

  18. I blame President Theodore Roosevelt - it was he who encouraged the change to "rational" (i.e. daft) spellings in America.

  19. And a preposition is a word you should never end a sentence with :upyeah:
