So what do you have instead of bikes in your pension plan, I'm intrigued as to what you think is better to have tucked away
I have sweet f a tucked away for the future so I guess that's my current pension plan. What im saying is I could never buy bikes for investment purposes as id ride them. These brand new ltd edition R etc bikes resale value would then plummet.Personally I think cars and bikes are there to be used so for me any future investments would have to be something else. I suppose its the same in the art world as many of these collectors paying stupid money for paintings put them straight into secure storage. If I paid millions for a painting id want it on my living room wall so I could at least look at the fucking thing.
That why I built a room in the house for them so I see them every day I feel privileged to own them. I put all my investments in to them. Other than that I am not a rich man I ride some, build some and collect some - as I can't afford to ride them all as you say. I had my spare money in a second property, now it is in bikes and is much more enjoyable!
On the other hand it could be said we ducati fans are falling victim to our own attitudes on these sps/r bikes. If we generally class the 1098R in my link as relatively high mileage for a R as has been said and been in dealers for a while and cant shift it is it any wonder they don't get used much by owners. The less they are used the more attractive they are to collectors and so prices rise. Im just glad I purchased my 916sps yrs ago and not at todays silly prices. As for these foggy reps go figure.Seem to remember them fetching around 8-9k when I got my bike.I could understand them being worth 30k plus if there was only a handlfull left from the original 200 produced.
When the Bayliss 1098R's were launched at the end of 2008 the price tag was £29,995 (some owners got them at £27K if ordered before the 1st of March 2009). So a £5K increase on an unused 1 is a small profit, even if it sells for £30K the owner gets his money back. The same Bayliss owner, sold an unused Desmo some time ago and sold it for £55k. So the old adage of 'supply & demand' will probably kick in, or a Lottery winner/ Collector will come along and do a deal to take it. When you consider that the Corse 1198R's were sold for about £32K when new, this Bayliss doesn't sound an expensive investment by comparison. How many Corse 1198R's do you think are in the UK or were even sold? I can tell you according to DUK the numbers are in single 'figures'. The 1198R owner has taken quite a hit inline with other Ducati models IMHO. Think of a 1098R at £24K new in 2008 and the 1198R at £32K new in 2010/11. By comparison the values are similar. TBH I prefer the original 08 R's, but then I would, i've owned 1 since it was new. The last, best SBK with a Trellis frame and although what seemed like a lot of money at the time, a bargain nowadays.
