899 V 1199

  1. TBH I don't know what I can / will keep up with, but the 749s is such a beautiful bike i just wanted to have and ride one,, I really don't expect that I will ever ride it to its potential ( because to find a limit then one must first exceed that limit, and that is the one thing that I do not want to do ) but i don't care,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, sorry ,not 889 or 1199 but same difference.

  2. None of us are the equivalent to the likes of Crutchlow, Rossi or Bayliss but we do the best we can on the machines we own, I ride for pleasure, whether it be fast or slow as long as I enjoy it that is all that matters, I have ridden the 899 for past year 7,000 miles and yes it is a tool and a half, love the QS & TC, but it is too smooth and feels more like an inline four, it has lost character engine wise but is still one of the prettiest bikes on the block irrespective of what colour it is.
TT is right to know your limit you will have to go beyond it first which means a very expensive repair job.
IMHO my 848 Evo was a better bike in some ways compared to the 899, if it had TC and QS I doubt I would have traded it in.

  3. I miss my 848 a bit too. 1199 is too easy to ride fast. Doesn't want to kill me until it hits 7k revs. Prefer the threat of death nearer the 4k mark

    Keep looking at 1098R 's and 1198Sp.

  4. Completely agree. I miss the scariness of my old 1098 at sub 100mph speeds. Even though the 1199 is easier to ride at lower speeds you need to be going over 100mph to get the same thrill. I can see myself looking for another 10/1198 to add to the collection in the future.

  5. Reading your two posts has made me question WTF have I done.
I never found my 848 scary but I loved the grunt it had (saw 175mph clock speed 5th redline), I traded up to an 899 thinking I would get more of the same plus the bonus of TC/QS.
But it feels tame compared to the 848 Evo and also compared to my 848 Streetfighter which is pretty much std only arrow slip-ons and 1 tooth smaller front cog.
I have traded 899 in for 1199, so will I get the same feel from that as I did my 899 power in a nice easy progressive manner with no real feel to it?

  6. i went from 1098 to 899,although it was a great bike missed that bit of grunt so 5 months later traded for a 1199. not ridden it properly yet and needs running in but hope it has that bit of something that the 899 is missing

  7. The 1199is just too easy to ride. It's quick for sure, but not until it hits 7k revs. 899 I was very disappointed with as it had no grunt at all.

My problem was that a 1098R was double 1199 insurance , and I was buying a 6 year old bike with no warranty , and more cash to buy it. Couldn't justify it if I'm honest. My 1199 is great , but meh. Doesn't stir the soul as much. however I did do more miles in a month of owning the 1199 than the whole of last summer on the 848. Maybe it's just the winter blues

  8. Well I am hoping to run it in before spring hits, get first service done ful Termi system fitted and 1 tooth down on front sprocket then we will see what's what.

  9. Newer bikes come geared down already I think? Mine certainly doesn't need any more. I've got termi cans which add a bit of drama but not as much as the 848 ones did.

  10. I think you test rode a duffer

  11. My 848 Evo had full system that certainly made a big difference.

  12. Or as he says....it has no grunt. It all depends on what you are used to riding.
Never rode the 899 but on track I find the 1199 has no grunt (used to riding S1000rr), it's deceiving though as it does the same speed on the straights and the same lap times.....just feels like it has....no grunt.

  13. Define grunt

  14. Edited my post above to explain what I think....Grunt compared to what you are used to.

Come from a smaller bike it will feel fast and grunty, come from a larger bike and it will feel lacklustre (in the power stakes).

  15. Ok. I see what you mean, but don't necessarily agree.

I went from the Big Bang R1 to the 848 EC SE. That had more "useable" power and felt like it had more power than the R1, strangely enough. I then went to the 899 and that has more grunt again.

I can also tell you that some very good riders on bigger bikes, including the 1199, have never left me standing on the road, to date. I can't comment on track as I've never taken the 899 on track. I'm not saying I'm Valentino Rossi cos I'm nowhere near being even half as good but these people who I consider to be very good riders that do lots of track days (ask @Dave and @finm cos they rode with us in Scotland) couldn't and didn't shake me off. I put that down to the grunt the 899 has. ;)

  16. EL T as I have said many times on this forum the 899 is slower than the 848 Evo, maybe not on paper but in real life I found this so.
    848 Evo
Wheelie 1st, 2nd and 3rd, in 3rd at about 80mph drop the throttle and then crank it open my 848 would lift with no probs. I saw 175mph clock speed in 5th and it was redlining but not quite rev limiter.

    899
Wheelie 1st gear, in 2nd you really had to time it right and in 3rd not a chance
Top speed, I saw 162mph clock speed in 6th and the red lights for redlining were flickering.

  17. Fair enough, if you are happy with it and think it has lots of grunt, thats the main thing I guess.

  18. I know that the 899 will not keep up with the 1199 and suchlike on the straights, but it soon catches them up on the bends.

Like I say, they are my findings. We all have an opinion. And the point of forums like this is so we can share them. :)

  19. i had a hangover. and was in skye afore ye!
but to be honest i dont remember any slow riders, the beauty of not knowing where the coppers sit, if it happens again i will recommend better less policed roads.
and still get me ass whipped by them Manchurian's :Grumpy:

  20. Yes mate you are quite right.
But what was said in my post is not an opinion based on feel, it is an opinion based on speedo readings and physical performance of the bikes measured against each other.
The 899 has less grunt in 2nd and 3rd not an opinion but fact, if I can wheelie my 848 off the throttle in 2nd at 60ish in 3rd at 80ish, if the 899 is more powerful it should be able to do exactly the same but it doesn't.
I had to drop a tooth off the front sprocket to get it to wheelie in 2nd. Still wouldn't lift in third though :(
So the evidence I have provided is that the 899 has less power in 2nd and 3rd and a lower top speed.
By disagreeing with my post you are then implying I am a liar.
    Does not sit well.
