When you go for a fun ride (as opposed to a commute or doing a chore) is it more likely to be on your own, with other Ducatisti or with riders of other makes?
Used to ride out with mates, over the years, but more recently ... well, let's just say the shine has been rubbed off the fun that group rides used to be. I ride like Billy now - on my own and no mates.
I do a few half day rides with two mates one on a new 1050 Tiger the other on various old Ducrappis, Scrambler, Dharma, 350 and a Laverda, the rest of the time on my own for an hour or two, I ride a 650 single Caff Racer conversion having just sold the Monster.
Most likely solo, occasionally with one or two others, not a big fan of group rides as I'm a bit of a Captain Sensible and don't want to spoil others rides! That's what happens when you get older and desires change. Happier to just go out and enjoy the sights, sounds and (sometimes) smells and you can't do that when going for it.
Mostly on my todd, sometimes with a few others or with my brother. I'm not keen on group rides at all. Don't mind a meet up, coke and a chat... But not these 10+ outings, the gaps get smaller and smaller while overtaking/keeping up! Although you can learn a lot by ridding with another or a few more experienced jockeys!
My preference is to ride alone so no worries about how anyone else rides . That said the trouble and I often ride together but that is usually instead of taking the car. Why, only last night we went to Lidl to buy some of their delicious Greek Yoghurt. Rock n Roll lifestyle or what!
I did used to ride more frequently with other people, but many have got kids now, or disappeared or something. Tend to ride by myself - easier to organise. But I still like riding with some friends who ride the same as I do, i.e. in a sportsbike fashion but not confusing the road with a track. People who dawdle quickly annoy me : They don't overtake cars when they could, and then, just when they shouldn't, suddenly go for it, leaving you following said car for the next mile of twisty bends while they disappear up the road. Or they sometimes insist on overtaking you on a straight, and then braking fiercely for corners and creeping round them so that you think you're going to run into the back of them. And I don't like riding with people who think they have something to prove. They can prove it on a track as far as I am concerned. Any group above 4 is totally unmanageable: people getting lost, stopping to take pix, stopping for fuel, unable to decide on a route, unable to decide whether or not to stop for lunch. Does my brain in. When I ride, I tend to ride. No lunch. Only stop for fuel and the odd coffee. This isn't to many people's taste.
Usualy alone, have only found one or two who are able/willing to get a move on, others I ride with have Bennelli Tornado 900, KTM 990SMT but its trying to coincide with others free time. I enjoyed our trip out the other night to Weston....nice and swift.
Usually with others, but these days I prefer to know who they are, and their capabilities. I need to trust them. Still there is a lot to be said for doing your own thing, stop when and where you want and go when it suits you , still you cant beat the camaradarie of riding a great road witha few friends and having a few beers afterwards.
I think that 100 plus miles rides with good company can be fun and even special but a short 'get it out of your system' blast is best done on your own.
Myself, I used to ride mainly with other Ducati owners - we had a real good SW Ducati scene down here in the Ducatisti days. Then I had my bikes in storage for a while, my regular riding buddy andyrh traded his 749 in for a mountain-bike and Dan closed Ducatisti down ... so it all died a bit of death and it was all solo riding for me last year. This year however I have started doing a few ride-outs with some peeps off South West Bikers | Motorcycle Forum and I'm really enjoying the banter over a cuppa when we stop for a breather
I either go out on my own or with mates that all have Japanese bikes, not been out with anyone from here yet...
I have voted for other ducatisti as I ride out with Duke1276 all the time and clearly he has a Duke however we also ride out with mates who own different makes of bikes, RC8, repsol blade, ZX10... effectively I could vote twice!
Best rides are with a couple of other Ducati riders, hooning around Northwales. You know who you are. Sometimes go out on my own but rarely go far I have a mate with a ZX9R, bloody nice chap but has a fixation with Iridium things And as I have a shagged bike I dont ride at all at the mo. So I can click all 4
I mainly rode with someone or with a group of ducatisti. Rode a lot with zimbo and gilps in the early days and Dicky Mint off the old forum Spent some time riding on my own but Billy no mates and coffee is lonely Before my accident I rode with a local guy who has a zx10r Have to say everyone of them rode to my abilities
