So I've Decided On A 1098s...

  1. Hi folks, after spending literally all week this week searching for a Ducati as I took a weeks holiday purposely to do so I think I've finally cracked it and found one, however just want to see if a few others echo the advice I've been given.

I had a Monster S4 for a couple of years up until 2010 when I was forced to sell it due to redundancy, and I've been bike-less since looking for the next bike at the right money but other stuff got in the way continually.

I started out looking for a 996 as this time around I want a superbike, I liked the monster was a great bike however left me exposed little being on the tall side at 6'5" so I fancied something with a bit more wind deflection.

Im my search for a 996 I scrapped that as there just weren't any good examples locally, plus I know about the rocker arm issue and with mostly old bikes I thought I'd steer clear and focus on the 998 with the better testastretta engine.

I've since seen a couple of 998's and a 999's and they just weren't quite right however focusing at this type of bike I could pretty much buy it outright.

Looking a bit deeper there would be high servicing costs every couple of years, potential unreliability issues etc and also a good example in traveling 400 miles plus in under a week looking seemed hard to find.

So I spoke to my local Ducati dealership and he asked if I'd considered an 848 or 1098, newer technology, more reliable, easier to ride and lower servicing costs which all got me thinking.

Since then I've pretty much set myself on a lovely 1098s I've found which is more than I wanted to spend however I feel I'm getting a bike better suited to me and addressing my concerns and worries over older earlier cheaper models, also the added bonus of better servicing costs and with the 1098 styling..!

Does anyone think I'm heading down the wrong route here as I'm off to do the deal tomorrow and feel pretty pleased with rational and reasoning behind taking this route, advice and opinions would be appreciated, thanks.

I always wanted a 1098 and now I have a chance to own one, seems too good an opportunity to pass up, this is something I've given a lot of thought to.

    Thanks

  2. How tall are you? Over 6" and your will probably prefer a 749/999 bike

  3. If you're a midget get a monkey bike :upyeah:

  4.

Seems to me that you have already made the decision to buy the 1098, so go ahead and do it, you would only regret not doing it anyway so take a chance, go with what your heart tells you.

You can always sell it in the future , life's too short, enjoy the bike!

  6. Follow your dream Stu

  7. Oooo, I think I'd get arrested for that!

  8. Oh and your dream is :)

  9. You know what it is..........you star in it every night

  10. Yeah I'm 6'5" however the 749/999 is a bit of a marmite bike for me really but I know what you mean.

  11. Thanks all, I started out originally looking at the 1098 and I've come full circle back to it after looking at so many other models, think I've just gotta do it

  12. You will find the 8 bikes very cramped. I had one whilst my 749 was being serviced and they are very short.
    What ducs have you ridden?
ps have a beaut 749for sale myself and I'm not buying an 8 as much as I like them

  13. Yeah - have you ridden them all? I'd strongly advise doing so before you buy. 996/998/999/1098 all different engine characters / different riding positions.

If you have ridden them all then you should go with what you think.

  14. Get it. If its doesnt quite fit you can always get adjustable rearsets and bar riser to sort your riding position.

  15. Would say no to bar risers on the 9 bikes unless you move the master cylinders

  16. I know someone with a 1098, got it after an 848 and just couldnt 'get it' like he did the 848. Stuck bar risers on and bingo, loves it to bits. Too much power but loves it all the same lol

  17. There's no point trying to be rational buying a bike, and especially not a Ducati.

It's a heart thing. So if you want a 1098s, get it. Get the thing you want, not what you think you ought to have (or you'll end up with a Mutley).

As others have said, you can always sell it. I tend to buy vehicles for long periods, but I did once fancy owning a stroker, so when I was in Oz for 9 months, that's what I did. I knew I'd be selling it when I left (not before I managed to throw it down the road, but that's another story). Great experience! (Apart from the talking to the tarmac bit).

Go get yourself a bit of Ducati Superbike experience!

  18. Actually you'd probably end up with a R1

  19. I do the same, I've had my car going on 7 years this coming January, I was going to change that but I just need to get back onto a bike more than I need to change my car.
