  1. i guess if you can do the work or afford to pay someone else, because lets face it the 748 is getting on a bit buy one if its something you want to fettle less go for the 848.

  2. getting on a bit?

  3. Why not a 998 :) easy, thread closed...

  4. newest being 11-12 years old? are the parts getting dearer? know nothing about them, other the 848 looks better.:Hilarious:

  5. Hey, I closed this thread with the 998 :)

  6. No split it down the middle 1098-848 / 2 +848 = 973

  7. I think the OP needs to test ride both bikes.Running costs shouldn't come into it if only using on weekends.

748 has the classic good looks that have aged very well.Great old school desmoquattro motor with more character to it and dry clutch.Downside servicing will be a bit more than 848.

848 newer tech more power, less character ie more refined engine with a wet clutch.Better for running costs.Downside looks exactly like a cbr600rr same for 1098/1198.

  9. dont really know if parts are getting dearer as mine never really needed anything till i rebuilt it (if that makes sense) but i didnt have 2 much problem getting anything

  10. i know a guy in fort William with one. he keeps it in a vac bag, it;s probably the closest i have come to one. know very little about them,
just something about the headlight fairing area,

  11. What !!! It comes with headlights WOW

  12. Greyman, Very nice indeed,

  13. for mot purposes only. probably. did i tell you i know very little about them.

  14. 748 = lots of cheap spares via fleabay plus the 748s in post 35 looks so much better than a 848 imho.

A lot of folks on here seem to prefer the smaller 748 compared to 916/996/998 due to the engine character again and a more revy nature.Go for best of both worlds and buy a 748R/ 916/996 sps if you can find one for sensible money. The sps litre bikes are similar in nature to the 748 ie more revy and a lot more rawer in feel compared to the litre BP models of same era.

The 748R are really nice bikes but require belt service every 6000 miles not 12000.Not so much of a problem if only occasional use on sunny weekends.

  15. Snap mate, I wouldn't even know how to ride one :)

  18. No comparison really. 848 unless for some reason you feel nostalgic, in which case get a Pantah ;)

  19. Hmmm, funny you should say that. Just when I thought I'd been swayed to the 848, I've heard about a 996 that's over here in Ireland and not too far away from me. It's going for reasonable money but has been largely unused for the last couple of years so would surely need full service/belts etc. What are the collective thoughts on the 996? It's a 2002 so I guess one of the last before the 998. Not sure which version it is but it has Showa forks and Öhlins shock. As a bargaining tool, what sort of cost should I budget for a major service based on the period of non-use? Cheers!

  20. 996 That's more like it, got the looks the grunt & a rattly clutch :upyeah:, give Millsport a bell re. servicing
