Garage Racking. Ready-made Or Dexion?

  1. Need to get some proper racking up in the garage for bike stuff, plus power tools, chain saws etc. I've got quite a lot of gear, some of it pretty heavy and I need to get as much of it off the ground as possible.
I bought some "economy" shelf units and they were utter shite. Had to go back. I need about 12' in length, about 7' or 8' high and 3 shelves would do.
Its either ready made long span shelving - I found these about the cheapest for a starter bay: Heavy Duty 600mm Longspan Shelving Starter Bay
Or I thought make up my own from 60 X 40mm Dexion with chipboard shelves. That's the cheapest option but I don't know how much weight that'll take over a 6" span. Space is everything, the fewer uprights the better.
Don't want to waste any more money on the wrong thing. Any ideas?

  2. Dexion all the way, there's a Chinese resturant round here where they've made a fire escape from the first floor entirely from dexion

  3. Id say kitchen units (wall hanging) im very restricted space wise on the floor so everything has to be up....theyre cheap and you can buy as you need them.

  4. Depends what loading you put on the chipboard and what span is has to deal with......

....it bends pretty easily, even 18mm - 22mm.

Any shelf material spanning 6'-0" is going to bend a bit with a few power tools on it if it's only say, 1'-0" deep.

  5. Mine are aluminium, £400 a bay but work were throwing them out so I got 5 bays for £0

  9. Floor paint pretty cheap you know....just saying.

  10. Always buy shelving like this 2nd hand, you'll save a fortune.
Around Heathrow there are loads of places that sell very high quality, strong shelving.
Try and choose one with easily adjusted shelf heights.

  11. Surely Dexion died over ten years ago?
I've not seen any real stuff for years.
We used in the rack our vans out, great as it bolts together.

  12. I use the Clarke heavy duty boltless shelving and that works very well for me.

  13. I was wondering that. If I use Dexion I'd use 60 X 40 mm with a rail front and back of each shelf. I just wondered how rigid the whole structure would be. I can fix it to the floor and the wall behind it, but that's all. Don't want it slopping side to side.
The company Dexion is still in production. This is one of the distributors: Dexion Slotted Angle but its not that cheap. In fact depending on what price I can get on the board for the shelves it may not be much cheaper than the ready-made long span bay.
I did look for second hand racking but that didn't seem all that cheap either. I'll keep looking but I've given up on ebay. Too many trade sellers and too few bargains.

  14. Costco do Gorilla? racking....can't remember the size but it's very heavy duty and not dear.
I've got loads of it,use it for storing truck tyres all sorts of heavy shite...

  15. If you can fix the shelves to the front and rear rails, chipboard would be OK, but cheap plywood may be better.

  16. I'd agree with this, I googled 'industrial shelving', found a local company that sold second hand shelving, spoke to them about some shelving for a garage, went and had a look and picked up some dexion type shelving for a song. Shelves are grey painted steel, around 3ft x 1ft, uprights cut to required size and all screws together cross braces which were also supplied new. I also went through the available shelves and picked out the ones in the best condition, although it's all clearly used, so might not suit a 'show garage'.....

As the uprights are similar to dexion, the shelves can be spaced as required, although once its screwed together and fixed to the wall, it's a big job to adjust the shelves. It is much stronger than the self assembly stuff from machine mart or Costco.

Such a bargain went and bought some more for the garden shed for mrs bimble's collection of plant pots, garden sundries and other redundant and unused domestic items that just might be useful sometime in the future...
