So what have you done today..?

  1. The permanent live is permanently live - if you unplugged it from the fan you would find out. The fan has a circuit board, with two live feeds. The fan is only switched on when the circuit detects a voltage on the switched live feed (when you turn on the bathroom light), but there will always be a voltage on the permanent live and this voltage powers the fan until the circuit board timer decides it's time to stop. So the feed isn't timed, it's permanently live, it's just that the circuitry decides when to use that power.

  2. I finished with my cross-eyed girlfriend today.

I had a strong suspicion she was seeing someone else

  3. So what you seem to be saying is that the timer is incorporated within the fan itself, rather than being a separate timer unit. At least, I think that's what you're saying ...

  4. It is, yes. Spot on.

  5. Wifey and I looked after sick doggy. Got an hour on the bike. Baltic weather. Fed up to the back teeth with winter.

  6. Went to see #2 son and family in Leeds first thing. Gave them a nice surprise. Then picked my best friend up from Leeds station, before driving to another friends house to pick him up to go to Leeds/Bradford airport.

Flew to Geneva with sleazyjet and was served by the campest male trolley dolly ever.

Luggage reclaim in Geneva was rubbish. I've never known it so bad. It took an hour and a half for our board bags to come through!

Finally got to Morzine at 8.30pm. Had a wonderful dinner with friends and I'm now just about to drop off to sleep.

All in all its been a nice day :)

  7. It will depend on how they have been wired in, check the light switch, if it has 3 live wires (Red) going in to it you should just be able to put in a double switch to replace the single switch.

  8. Char It's very likely that your 2 lights have been wired in such a way that there is a single switch controlling them both.
To switch both lights independently would involve reconfiguring the way they are wired, which could involve a lot of work, bearing in mind that floorboards might need to come up to facilitate access!

Can you let me know why you need them switched independently. Depending on what kind of light it is, a practical, workaround for your situation might be that you could fit an inline cord switch into one of the lights to prevent it being turned on when the main switch is On, thereby giving you control over it.

As Vince mentioned, you might ( although it's unlikely) have the solution already in that both lights have cables running to the light switch which would enable them to be switched separately with only a small modification.

Can you make safe the lighting circuit by turning off the relevant mcb ( miniature circuit breaker) or pulling the fuse on the fuseboard, remove the lights plate switch by undoing the 2 screws and take a photo of the wires that are going into the back of the switch and posting the photo here?

Be careful when replacing the screws that you don't pinch or trap any of the wires!

Also a photo of the ceiling light would be useful.

  9. Picked up some bits from Mark at MADASL Racing for the ST2 engine. Then started the repair on the engine case.

  10. Built either a very small vegetable patch so the kids can grow their own carrots (not many) or a very large little tray.

  16. All part of the big picture. Now, when I dig the trench round the outside of the garage to sort the drainage (next weekend) I have somewhere to put the dirt.
