Just been looking to get a pair of paddock stand bobbins for my 04 999S,loads of places sell them but on closer inspection of my swinger there are no threaded holes anywhere to be seen to screw them into....am I missing something?
There are no mounting points for bobbins on the '04 bikes. They came in on the later bikes with the black swingarm. Best/easiest way I've seen is to use the Gilles kit. Not cheap, but it works. Some axle slider kits offer a bobbin on the end to lift the bike with, but of course if you need the wheel out these don't work too well
There was a guy on the old Ducatiforum who modified a grey swing arm to fit bobbins, but unless you have access to tig welder and are pretty handy with fabrication it's a no go. As Nelly says, Gilles do a kit which replaces the adjuster blocks.
Someone on here recently said the 04 999R had a red frame with black swing arm but the old fairing style, was this only the R in 04 that did so?
There's Currently a later black swinger on ebay,seriously thinking about upgrading ,can anyone tell me if its just a plain swap or are there complications....anybody done it?
Mines a 2004 'S' with grey swinger ,silver frame and first series fairing....as far as I know all bikes from that year apart from the 'r' are like this.
Everything bolts in exactly the same including the brake caliper & bracket. You made need a new brake line, as my 999R swingarm came with a braided brake line, Depending on what exhaust system you have (I have a Termi 2-1-2 system), you may have a clearance issue. I had to modify the mid pipe to clear. If you have an asymetric system, then I have no idea if you will have an exhaust clearance issue or not.
Where would the cups locate?.. I've tried using a conventional stand with rubbers under each side of the swinger and because of the shape its not stable ,didnt fancy the bike falling over......
I had a 2003 999s and it had the grey swingarm like yours, and i ended up buying the DP rear stand as it has a kind of molded cup that the singarm sits in. i tried other stands, but they didnt feel right. you can also use a stand from a 996, but you cant remove the rear wheel though
Mine sits happily on a couple of cheap stands I got off ebay, less than £20 each. The rear one has rubber blocks rather than cups. This is the only picture I have of my bike on stands. If you want, next time I`m in the garage, I`ll take a better picture.
Several options - cheap stands for double sided swing arms work fine they have rubber on the cups to stop damage , Abba stands these work fine - I have both of these options plus one that goes under the front fork legs , you can use these 3 in various combinations for whatever job you are doing . A word on the bobbins , I put a later swing arm on my 04 s and put alloy bobbins into the threaded holes, when I had my recent off the bobbin obviously dug in the road and snapped the bolt in the threaded hole and then the swing arm got scuffed so it didn't really do what it should have , in my opinion the larger plastic type of bobbins would offer better crash protection.
I only rely on bobbins for paddock stand use, never for crash protection. My axle protectors / sliders do that job
I now have two, this one and one to unwrap and I'm not rich :Facepalm: they are truly worth the money!
