Whats The Better Option Exhaust Or Suspension?

Discussion in 'Ducati General Discussion' started by Adamwhittuk, Jan 31, 2015.

  1. Hello guys... after some advice.

i would say im an average rider.

What would i gain better from? termi slip on exhausts, a suspension set up or neither? would i be wasting money for example buying a ktec/ohlins rear shock and getting the standard front suspension set up (as i cant afford both)

    any help would be great!

  2. i have a 899 btw

  3. If you only have the funds for one upgrade, my money would be on suspension set up. Andy

  4. Agreed, suspension is worth more than any exhaust can provide. Learn to ride it first and then go for performance upgrades as you will be able to capitalise on a good setup. A good setup provides confidence to what you have and the ability to use it to the full.

  5. I've read an awful lot of posts on Ducati forums saying how much better a bike handles after getting the suspension properly set up for the rider, rather than on the out of the box settings. I'd have thought that you'd get better value for money, and a more noticeable improvement in the feel of the bike, from spending the money sorting suspension.

  6. I thought suspension was the better answer.

Does anyone know/recommend where to go... i live in the northwest.

  7. find a ktech or kais dealer. Hammer n Tongs in warrington are ktech dealers and helped in sorting out my ohlins rear shock with ktech. Kais are in manchester area I think.

  8. If you're anywhere near Leeds you could try Alpha suspension.

  9. I'd get the stock suspension set up properly before spending any money on aftermarket shocks. When you've outgrown all the OE has to offer you'll thoroughly know the bike and be in a better position to understand where the deficiencies are and how best to upgrade. You're the one riding it. I contemplated upgrading the entire set-up on my last bike before I sold it and after consulting an independent suspension specialist the most cost effective option would have been a Nitron or Ktech rear shock and a front end rebuild and re-valve. I could have had the lot all in for a grand. But that's getting ahead of yourself. For what it costs a pro set-up is about the best value for money you can get on a bike.

  10. as said above.. until you have the standard suspension set up properly you will not even come close to knowing the bikes potential. after all these bikes are made and tested by some of the best techs and test riders out there... they may have crappy finishes on some components but they are class bikes. having said that, weather you need termis or not get them!

  11. Thanks for that appreciate it. I might just get the standard set up then. the only thing is i can get this shock for £550 which i thought might be a good idea well at a good price. K-Tech Suspension, road race and offroad motorcyle suspension

  12. k tech sell their own stuff now .........some say it may be a bit like ohlins but i dont really know...

  13. Andy why not just get the suspension set up done with out replacing suspension its about £100 and you should still be able to buy slip ons too :)

  14. get the shock ( you know you need the bling ) and then have the bike sprung and set up to suit you. the termis can wait. fantastic bike youv got yourself there, enjoy it and be safe.

  15. The standard rear shock on the 899 is pretty poor, you can get the standard revalved, the k tech shock is good value at £550,its proberbley a ex 899 challenge shock as most now have gone over to Ohlins.

  16. It'd be worth giving Kais a call. They're in your neck of the woods. You also need to think what you want from the setup. Road or track? The bike was more focused towards road use rather than the stiffer track setup on the 1199.
Replacement shock would be nice and probably better but to begin with you may get more from a setup and then consider a change when you think you need one

  17. I have used kais numerous times for servicing and setup and they are a good bunch of lads, ride in out setup is generally around the £55 mark at kais and is well worth trying before you shell out on bling, but we all love our bling.

  18. i was tought remember T.S.B and get the best you can afford
    T.... tyres
    S......suspension
    B.......brakes

    havent gone far wrong since.

  19. The £50 or so I spent on simply getting my 1198 set up properly was the best money I've spent on an upgrade for a bike yet.

  20. Is the correct answer...
