Hi knowledgeable folks.....long story short, I'm being offered a 2002 900ss by a friend who is pretty poorly and would like me to have it. I have to be sensitive to his health and offer a reasonable price, but don't want to be dumb. It hasn't turned a wheel in 18 months and I'm not that familiar with the air-cooled range. Though like many I had old school Hailwood reps and 1970s 900ss posters on my wall as a kid. I don't know much but will be driving over on Saturday to take a gander and trailer it back here. Aside from the year I know its black - he says matt black so I assume some sort of 'dark' model. Or is that non-standard? He reckons its 7000 or maybe 9000 miles!! The seat's been cut down as he is short in the leg department. It's full fairing. Aside from the usual tyre kicking stuff and care about belts that haven't turned in a while - two questions: 1. As fans - why do I want one in my life? 2. Is it going to cause me grief - if so what to look for on this bike? The model specific watch outs. I'm quite taken with the idea as the basis for a project and my son is ready to move on from his Kwak ER6 to something more sporty......seems like a good pairing for our TT trip
sorry mate i cant help you much as the only ss's ive owned were carbies but i would say that its a good engine and as long as you thrash it and maintain it you should get years of pleasure outta her...
thanks for the comments nonetheless........made the mistake of looking at this site Home | Walt Siegl MotorcyclesWalt Siegl Motorcycles | Motorcycles Designed and Built by Walt Siegl in Harrisville New Hampshire One can dream.......
no mistake there mate! they are some lovely bikes! do it.. as in get started and follow it through, time flies by and if you start something (as painful and drawn out as it seems) in 2/3 years time (unless you is rich!) you will have something special if not you sell an unfinished project (no disgrace) but give it a shot
indeed...have done a few modest refurbs in the past and never stop tinkering with my Duc'. Given this ss will be sort of dropping into my garage, I feel I owe it some tlc. Will do the once over and as said TT with me and son Matt. Then start scouting for bits n bobs and project direction. having said that I do have a K******I lurking in the garage disassembled - never have two projects on the go at once !! Asking for trouble.
Know what you mean - had a bit of a garage clear out.......trouble is that leaves tempting space. Now that son is into bikes, too many idle beer fuelled discussions are filling the mythical shed.
What's the Kawasaki? Give it to me and your problem will be solved! Looking for a GPz1100 Engine currently if you have one laying about
I've got a 1999 ss, had it from 15,000 miles to its current 35,000 miles, taken to Europe several times and had very little problem with it. Timing sensor failed once and oil temp sensor last year. Other than that sweet as a nut. Handles really nicely too. I find it easier to ride in real world conditions than my 999s too. Would part with either of them .
Ah now - I used to have the GP(small z) 750. Twin shock and all. Then the ZXR750H1 - shouldn't have sold that one. No the one in bits is one of the first ZX7r into the country. Completely original - not exactly rare !! But I've had it all it's life. So I'm just going to do a neat and tidy nut and bolt refurb'. Totally stock is rare - no polished screens or purple screens.
Thanks Pat I'm gonna be buying so will be v interested to try back to back to 999s (which I love to bits - but really only let rip around Cadwell). Sensors...noted.
I have a ZXR750RR (K1) it too will be original when I swap the silly anodised bolts and mini indicators back - seen here behind one of my projects, you can never have too many projects
main things with the ie models are the same as carby models most problems are from inept owners but mainly check electrical connectors and upgrade starter wiring but if looking for faults check my thread on here on my 750 ss ie think I had most of the faults on that bike lol
what do you know? i used to race kwakas... (ok only 125 kx's and only completed one sanctioned race) .... maybe your right... cock
I am, nob ed - mine is 216bhp at the rear wheel - leaving the nitrous off it so it'll be a miserly 155 rwhp in the project KR so I'll beat you on your KX on the road, but only just
In my part of the world, Matt Black bikes (Factory) are an "S" not an "SS", so lower quality ancillary bits (wheels, suspension, brakes etc.) but same engine.
