Guys out today and got held up for a few minutes at a level crossing. early evening 20 degrees. into neutral left it running. went up to 109degrees so turned off. train came almost immediately so started back up but it turned over even slower than usual. i thought the fan would come in at about 96ish. your thoughts would be helpful please. cheers Budha
Seen 107, maybe 108C come up on my '03 999S. Fans have always managed to get it back down to 105C or less whilst stationary. I don't think 109C is a problem but if it keeps climbing up, obviously that's an issue.
Mine also heats up very quickly if I stop. You must have chickened out just before the fans kicked in Budah. You need to know that they work! Mine gets to 106 before they run, even with both fans it takes a while to get back below 100, if you stay stationary.
Good old temperature thread. My fans also kicks in at around 105. I have seen extremes over 110, but it has always managed to get it below a 100. If your fans haven't kicked in at 110, I would be a bit worried though.
We recently got caught for 30 minutes in total grid lock in the centre of Brussels. The air temp was between 45 °C and 50 °C and we were cooking however the water temp never got above 110 °C and the bike never missed a beat
maybe i did chicken out just before they came on (lack off moral fibre) but it did seem very hot. soon went down when riding though. maybe i just got to grow some bigger ones and wait for them. thanks
OK guys I think we have got to the root cause of the problem. The problem is 'STOPPING'. So if everyone would just keep moving no ones bike will get close to overheating OK?
You could also try to ride it hard, then let it idle till it reaches 105-110, and turn of the engine, but keep the bike turned on. The fans will still kick in, as long as the computer/dash is on. Atleast your engine won't be running at those temperatures, so you wouldn't need the bigger ones to test them fans.
Yes the fans will run, but as the engine is now stopped the water pump is no longer pumping the Coolant around the engine so the only thing you are cooling down is the radiator, not the all important engine. :wink:
tested this yesterday... crawling through small town that had a country show on. Gardai making a hash of traffic maneuvers as usual... crawled up to 107 then fans kicked it back down to 100... quite impressed, it was a very humid day...
Thread revival... Mine hit 119 today, fans running but temp not dropping. Coolant levels OK. Maybe a coolant blockage/air lock?
What's up with your rad? I did think it was odd that mine got up to 90-odd on Saturday - I was in traffic for a while, and it was only about 14 degrees C ambient.
My fans aren't stopping the temperature climb. Only moving swiftly keeps it down. Mines a 2010 so probably done that thing I've read about on here where the internal fins collapse and cause a blockage
Oooh that's crap, I'm sorry to hear that. Seems a bit crap - can't imagine that sort of issue occurring on a car. Can it be flushed out or refurbished?
