Hi Folks, can anyone recommend a rear wheel removal socket/tool (46mm) for touring use? I already have a massive steel Signet 46mm socket I use in the kitchen, er, I mean workshop with the Mutley. I have carried it before but it weights a bl**dy ton, and takes up loads of space... I'm looking for something smaller/lighter to be carried in case of emergency (where a tyre place doesn't have the right size for example). I've read on here about the Oberon tool being made out of cheese, and there are quite a few different ones for sale in the USA, but it's hard to gauge the size/weight - don't want to end up with something like I have already... Any suggestions? If all else fails I can just take the signet, but that would take up space better used for bringing back a bottle of single malt from the highlands ;-)
I have the Motomfg one. It's about an inch thick and around 2 1/2" dia. It fits in bottom of the under seat tray no bother.
It's been so long since I've seen mine but don't they come with a flat ring spanner in the tool kit? I've not got a new bike though to know if they even still provide a tool kit.
You could always get another 46mm socket and cut out a section from the middle. Then have it welded up. I bet you could loose over an inch in height.
Oberon are very specific about not using power tools. I would also be reluctant to use an extended bar as well. After all the socket is manufactured from aluminium and is expected to take a fair bit of torque to undo. The 1200 Multistrada comes with a repair kit that I believe you can use without taking the wheel off and to be fair, I'm not sure I would want to. When my girlfriend took her Diavel to have the tyres changed during 3 days on track, the tyre fitter was very unhappy and it ended up taking 3 blokes to get the rear wheel nut undone. Give me an 18v/320Nm impact driver any time. Andy
No it's this one Steel Ducati 1098/1198 SF MTS1200 wheel nut socket It's 55mm for the MTS and 1098/1198 wheels.
Ah OK, ta. Yes I'd seen that one - looks spot on. Though as I have a 1000DS I need 46mm and they didn't seem to do one that size unfortunately. Cheers!
Just for the record, I ended up getting the MotoMFG one here: Ducati 41mm/46mm wheel nut socket It's pretty lightweight (which is what I wanted as the Signet could be used as a ship anchor ;-). If I ever have to use it I'll report back as to how it stands up. Oh and it was delivered in just over a week direct from the US. Fantastic service. Cheers.
