1993 900ss Belt Change

Discussion in 'Supersport (1974-2007)' started by ush1000, Feb 10, 2015.

  1. There's a post somewhere on this forum about it..............the 750s and the 600s are available in both.

Here it is.....Timing Belts | Ducati Forum

  2. Looks as though Nelly is saying that belts are still available for all. 750s have square teeth, 900s have round teeth and are longer. The discontinued belts are old spec and have been superseded by higher spec belts with different part numbers.

    Panic over?

  4. Expensive........??

My last ones were £38 inc P&P, but I think they are cheaper than the 900 ones anyway.......

  5. And I bet MR had them in stock, another reason I buy from them. I also bet they'll drop through your letterbox tomorrow morning ;-) So when do you want to fit them?

  6. Bike is on SORN so will wait until March if thats ok (Duke doesn't get much use as I have others to ride in the cold and wet). Yes MR had them in stock and I will have them tomorrow, great service!!

  7. Interesting price for what appears to be an Italian belt being sold in the States. Can we not get these direct from Italy?????

My guess is that this is a compromise tooth profile enabling them to simply vary the length of the belts to fit different models without needing to vary the tooth profile as well.

  8. Hi Nick, Can I give you my phone number, is it ok to do that on this forum, some have rules about that. Also we could do the belt change in my garage? Think I have enough tools for the job

  11. Andrew, if it's ok with you we'll do it at my place, as I know I have all the right tools! :)

  12. You can do mine next time Nick....I'll ride it down for the crack...........it came from near you anyway.

  13. Didn't see this "how to" posted, so for future reference

Also another alternative for belts are the "exact fit belts".

  14. That's what I've got in my 999.
Even with shipping, VAT and handling charge they were cheaper than the through the nose price that Ducati charge for their Gates belts.
If only someone would take on being the European importer and distributor, they'd be cheaper still.
The dollar price is $50.00 per belt. A pair of Gates/Ducati belts is £142.00...

  15. Belts all done, thanks for all your help on here. Some closing comments if anyone reads this thread in the future. Maybe because I was working in my garage in the winter and it was not very warm, my old belts did not come off easily but needed a little gentle prying with a small flat blade screwdriver to lift them off the cam pulleys. Both cam pulleys wanted to move away from their marks, the rear cam sprung clockwise and would not stay in place without being held with a pair of long nose pliers (almost a 3 hand job to get the rear belt on). I didn't see the need to use chalk or crayons to make any marks on any belts. Provided all 3 pulleys stayed on their marks all was ok.
    Thanks again chaps.

  16. I mark the belts to make sure they are spot on..........it only takes one tooth out to give you nasty problems.......yes, you can rely on the timing marks if they are spot on too, but all three aren't always completely in alignment, simply because the marks are slightly 'off'......

....I trust you turned the engine over slowly by hand before you fired it up.....

  17. oh yes I was super cautious. Maybe its my age but I still find it cool watching the belts and pulleys wirring away in perfect unison (must get a life!!)

  18. The bit about watching the belts whirring away always confuses me......I expect them to be running in the opposite direction for some unknown reason....

  19. I used the guide on YouTube from California cycleworks, I've just changed the belts again 3 years later, and can report back that the old belts still had good tension and looked thoroughly serviceable. There was also a complete absence of belt dust inside the covers (a sure fire sign of a belt being too tight)

I've been using Dayco belts from Amazon, but belt choice is another area of Nass confusion. I work on the theory that Ducati don't make their own belts, so anyone like gates, Dayco or exact fit will be of equal quality, and also Ducati belts are more likely to be counterfeit unless bought from Ducati themselves or someone like Baines Racing, in which case you are paying for a logo.
