I read somewhere that the SS iE is known for scorched fairings where the exhaust pipes sit close. Truth or myth? I've not had mine long enough to find out! And if it is true is there a fix?
The IE I bought a few years back had, I never ran it myself as it got stripped but I would have thought it would be easy enough to move the panel on its mounts if it's close so it doesn't happen.
I had a couple of SSIEs between 2000 and 2012, never had any problems with scorched fairings. Or anything else for that matter. Neither ever had a problem with anything. Great bikes.

Only problems might be after a lot of heavy rain, water can get into the TPS connector, the connector corrodes as you look at it,and the poor connection sends the atPS crazy, rough running and 20mpg fuel consumption . All sortedwith a clean though.
Yes , I agree. I have a 1000 ss ie and the exhausts (just near the slip ons )sit very close to the very rear of the lower fairing. So much so that I took the precaution of putting some silver heat resistant foil between the two.
Mines got 35k miles on it, done track days and Europe, no issues at all. Looks like its another myth.
I will agree the tps connector gets corroded water ran inside the waterproof connector down the wires rubber bungs in the connector around the wires on mine did not seal at all had to replace connector sealed with some silicone gasket sealer lol
I've done 5000 miles on my ie (now at 25000) and no scorching. Longest ride was 529 miles (bringing it home from Oban in Scotland)
I've had problems with mine actually. Melted a bit on both sides. Tried pulling the fairings apart with a spacer to give some room, which stopped it getting worse…
It seems most haven't but a couple have so I've invested in some adhesive backed foil: Cool-It Adhesive Backed Aluminium Heat Barrier -Protects Plastics And Components | eBay
Yeah, I got something similar to that. Lasted about a month before it pealed off in bits and looked shit. Didn't really help in the long term...
So what does help? What was your spacer made from, how did it work, where did you position it? We need details man!
Had to use a make-shift metal bracket. So now, the clip/bracket is spacing the bottom of the fairings farther apart so they are not touching the pipes (or each other) while holding the fairings together (at a distance). I'd take a picture for you, but my Duc is on the other side of London in my garage for the winter.
I wonder why some do and some don't? Most odd considering they're all made the same, the exhaust pipes will reach the same kind of temperatures and be the same distance from the inside of the fairing lowers.
