Look what I found..........thread M12 x 1.0mm which should be the same as the boss on the tank..... It has ON, OFF & RESERVE.........Coat approx £12. Length/Depth appears to be about the same as the petcock, so maybe a finger can reach the tap lever when the tank is down.....it just needs to be positioned carefully. So, remove the petcock; cut off the pipe inside; if necessary, drill out the boss to take the filter mesh.....(what is the o/d of that pipe BTW?..........if the filter mesh will fit up the inside of it, then leave a 20mm stub of pipe, just in case you want to revert to OEM method). Remove the pump and all the gubbins inside; but leave the return pipe exactly as it is. Fit Facet 1 - 4psi fuel pump externally plus an external inline filter; plus an inline electric cut-off all in the fuel line between the tank and before the Y piece..........Job done for about £50.
Al you're a Star, I have ordered one, can this not be used as a direct swap for the old one ? and does it need the external pump... Plenty more silly questions where that came from :Wacky:
I don't know yet..........I only found it the other day after a lot of searching (that's why I asked for a check on the petcock thread .......)...... Doesn't need the external pump, but you will have to remove the filter mesh from the new tap otherwise it isn't going to go inside the metal delivery pipe inside the tank..... Actually you are now going to be a guinea pig because I'm not even sure of the dimension of the tap --- I'm fairly certain that it is about the same depth as the petcock but I'm not sure how and where the ON/OFF handle will sit when the tank is let down into place......I suspect the handle may have to be cut down a bit...... Also, I haven't had a reply from the sellers as to what bore the tap outlet is...... See pic.....(not my tank)
That's fine with me Al you use me for what ever, blimey that sounded sooo wrong lol, just want none leaking carbs and petrol free house, im hoping I wont have to take the Carbs off to strip them, haven't done it in years.

I haven't done the pump modification yet...........although I have the external pump and external filter (assuming my mate didn't nick it) I really can't face pissing about getting the filler cap out and rummaging around inside the tank until I really need to......(besides, the skin on my hands and forearms is at risk so the slightest scrape will tear it). I worked out where everything will be mounted and what to do inside the tank (leaving it so that it could revert to OEM by adding a small length of hose back in)...... IIRC those fuel taps if they are like the old Brit ones, the filter mesh unscrews from the tap so it can be cleaned or changed........I can see the reserve tube in the tap pic, so I guess main flow is down the top, while a hole for the reserve is lower down........on that basis, if you have removed the filter and that reserve tube hits the bend inside the tank, then you may have to cut the reserve tube down a bit.......OK, it means the reserve fuel will be less but if the in-tank fuel sender works OK, then it won't matter. PS....If you decide to fiddle with your fuel level sender, go very easy on the big nut thingy....it's cheese plastic.
Think you're right about possibly cutting it down, should turn up Thursday AM so ill have a look before my night shifts and let you know. Cheers for all the advice
It is 4mm approx........I doubt now that it would be OK with the OEM set-up, but probably alright with an externally mounted Facet pump. Have to wait until I get round to doing the modification to be sure, but in the meantime I shall be playing around with the tap to see if I can improve the bore.
Thanks All. I've been kicking around similar thoughts, but along the lines of a remote tap, which would be easier to access and also be easier to get hose off/on. I'd picked up an old 900 Monster tap, and was surprised how small the bore was (a bit less than 4mm), hence my question. On this basis, yours ought to be OK, although space is going to be limited as you say. Just need to source a right angle elbow to replace the original tap.
It would much easier to fit on the left side of the tank, so you could always do away with the fuel level sender by using a new ally or stainless steel nut with a threading to take a fuel tap in the centre.............. If fitted in the normal position, it seems the tap lever will work if 'across' the bike....but getting the pipe around would mean the hose would need to be slightly longer...........unless the tap outlet snags on the return hose spigot.
Funny! Mine has also this type of (Open/Reserve/Close) three position tap. Possibly installed by previous owner not willing to pay for an expensive Ductai spare
No markings at all. I've been trying to unscrew it but seems to be welded . It looks like a basic standard tap from another bike. Whenever I manage to remove it, I'll see if there is any brand or indication.
Hi Al, this is the tap once fully dissasembled. It has no marks and is a basic 10mm female adaptor that fits into the standard thread of the tank. I'm not planning to use it and is in good shape. It's yours if you are intrested Tom
Hi Steve..............the bore on the SS (carbed) OEM fuel lines is 8mm and the OEM tap bore is pretty near that too........ I have been looking at all taps including the British ones, but the biggest issue with any tap is that accessing it while the SS tank is down and say, turning it onto Reserve, must be like trying to extract a tooth via your behind (not your's personally, I mean) with one finger....... I did read somewhere, that someone had sourced a tap used in gas installation but whether that is domestic gas or gas oil, I don't have a clue and I can't find where I read it.
