Coding A Key For 848

Discussion in 'Technical Help' started by pablito, Feb 13, 2015.

  1. So I lost one of my spare coded keys for my 848 and I need to get another done. I took it in to the workshop and they told me that in order to reprogram it the mode button needs to work, which mine isn't. When you press the mode button down you get through the different distance counters, but when you press it up nothing happens. I therefore have two questions to anybody who might know i) can I get the spare key coded independently of the bike and just with the code from the code card ii) any ideas why the mode button would work when pressing down but not when pressing up?
    Thanks

  2. Not sure what you mean by the mode button. I was able to get a key cut for my 848(nice chap on here sent me a spare with a transponder) at Timpsons. They programmed it to my other key and cut it charging me a tenner all in. Don't go to Ducati they will charge you about 5 times that.

  3. Who programmed it, the person who sent you the key or Timpsons?

  4. Timpsons, as long as the spare has a transponder within it can be programmed to your code. If I can remember who it was that sent me the key I will let you know.

  5. FYI this is the mode button

  6. Is the mode switch U/S? If it is you could disconnect the wires into it and wire in a centre off rocker switch.

The mode switch works by sending either a +ve or -ve signal to the dash.

I'll work out the wire colours and post them later.

If you're near West Yorks then I could clone your current key to a blank.

  7. Forgot to add' you can only program a new key to the dash if you have the code card. Only 2 keys can be programmed into the dash.

  8. What do you mean by U/S.

Unfortunately I'm in London so a bit too far away to ride over. Thanks though

  9. Unserviceable (not working)

  10. It probably is serviceable but it means booking it in to find out what the problem is. The mechanic said he traced it back a bit and couldn't find the problem, and that the connection seemed fine. He said it could be a problem with the clock or something else. To be honest I'm not sure how much he tried as he kept telling me how busy he was. Given the down switch works I don't think it has anything do do with the clocks/dash. Correct me if I'm wrong.

  11. you really need the mode switch to work so that you can work the dash correctly and reset things like the clock and trip. If I remember correctly pressing up sends +12v and down sends -ve. These signals go via the Grey (Gr) wire of the mode switch to pin 16 on the dash. Toggling between + and - allows things to be set.

To clone the key you need a key blank with a virgin T5 transponder Ducati Blank Uncut Key with transponder chip | eBay

Timpsons can help cutting and cloning the key.

  12. As for your mode button, if you have a screwdriver and a volt meter I can go through a few checks. I'm better at doing stuff than explaining how to do it, and I'm better at explaining than writing about it so all I'll say to start with is check the switch gear plug going to the loom. It may me corroded or have a loose pin.

  13. I haven't had a sec yet to take a look, but today I also found the horn isn't working. Electricals aren't really my thing but I assume its linked, any ideas on where I should take a look?

  14. The "A" mode button, the horn, headlamp flash, the brake lights and the lap timer all are all supplied by the same circuit. If the brake lights aren't working either check fuse no 3, it's a 15A. If the brake lights work the problem may be a broken connection to the switch. There should be 12V on the red/blue wire of the switch connector.

  15. So the break light isn't working so I assume it is the fuse. I've never delved into the electrics, so if you can help me out I'd appreciate it. I've removed the black panel underneath the left handlebar and can see the loom that comes from the mode/light etc. where do I find the fuse and if I need to replace it do I have to disconnect the battery? Thanks

  16. This is what I see.

  17. Fuse box is just above the battery box

  18. Great, I'll take a look. Thanks

  19. From the manual-

I believe it's the 3rd fuse from the left.

  20. I can clone your key if you get stuck.

You can send me your key and I'll send it back with an exact copy, or I can supply an uncut key with blank transponder, or anything in between.

Give me a shout if you need help.
