If he is buying it for a part of his pension fund and you have a monetary investment quite possibly going up in value less, then I know where I would want to be. You need to look upon it as another facet of investment, one which is ultimately more enjoyable than the one you have chosen - more tangible and a piece of art in a way. Or look upon it as another way to enjoy motorbikes. It is more enjoyable for me to ride, build bikes and collect them as part of my pension as well than just riding them - not sure why that is so inconceivable to someone who likes bikes, but we are all different
What is wrong with people if a guy wants to keep a bike in the garage to clean polish tinker with or just to stare or just plain and simple just to own it,or to ride it every weekend what is the hassle let everyone have their fun
Hey matey he can do what he likes, his money, I just dont get it thats all. Same as I do t get peolpe who buy lots of the same type of bike, especially old race bikes, stick them away and it means they dont get used as the 'should' be Same applies with cars too
It does here too, my Exige is pushing £30K now, nearly double what I paid 6 years ago - but it gets used every year but only half a dozen times, now showing 20K miles - I love owning it but it is an investment, if it hadn't been I could not have justified owning it. I drive a little Modus, happy knowing I have the Lotus sat at home. Don't see the point in driving nice cars all the time and loosing money that can be spent on bikes :Happy:
It wil be used sparingly, washed and polished, admired and appreciated. I have no intention of it being a garage queen. I have 888 SP4S (SPS) and regularly use it to ride into London. So I DO use my bikes whenever the opportunity arises. Still, better than a pension, only people making money out of my money will be those in the City.
A 1098R Bayliss should make a good investment if 916SPS Foggy Rep's are anything to go by.They seem to fetch quite a bit more now than the standard 916SPS.However the race rep 999R bikes don't seem to fetch that much over the standard R's.Im thinking Fila and Xerox reps.Maybe as a investment the standard 1098R original in mint v/low miles might be the better option.Race reps are marmite bikes after all. For me I just love riding bikes so would rather put the miles on em and just accept the depreciation on SPS/R bikes when you do this.Not being able to ride my bike and only sit on it making brum brum noises would be like slow torture and drive me mad. Just remembered 1198R corse.That would probably be at the top of my list for 1098/1198 investment as I don't think there is so many about.

Exactly, I have a couple of R's and other bikes purely as investments, run bikes every year, build them too - but some still criticise - I can't imagine what is wrong with investing in something you love if it appreciates in value for a pension fund - even if the speculation doesn't work - it is the best form of investment for me, every time I walk in to my Bike room it is a great feeling
Hense I suggested ducati bikes that would be good investments in my previous post lol. 1/ 1198R Corse edition (again paint might not be to everyones liking but the very low numbers mean a good investment potential no?) 2/ 1098R Bayliss edition ( more risky imho as race reps are marmite see previous post foggy reps seem opposite so who knows) 3/Original 1098R (everyone loves red so wider appeal but more numbers so not as rare as above bikes) If people want to look at them and polish them in the garage/front room then knock yourselves out.Not for me though as like I said already I like riding bikes.
My tip is one of mine (of course ) 999R Fila, world champs x 2 years - only 200 made. Slightly missed the boat now as they are climbing but will continue. 999R climbing quickly over the last 2 years also. 1098R maybe not quite bottomed yet - but a sure fire bet if you by on the turn. R's tend to drop to 50% new value historically then turn, but this trend may not always be the case if more start to speculate. Good to keep your eyes open for anything that looks cheap - my best buy was an '86 GSXR - RR with dry clutch, nearly triple the price in 3 years (but I saw it cheap and bought it over the phone). By the time I picked it up the guy had been offered £3K more. They are going for £12 - £15K when they turn up now and soon sell.
No one is critisizing, already said YOUR money do what YOU like. I just don't get it, simple as that. If I had endless pots of cash would I fill a garage with bikes and/or cars? Hell yeah. But I would still have to ride them or I think they'd be sold. I, me not you or anyone else as I am talking about ME, see no point in having these as investments alone. Is that simple enough and clear enough to understand?! Can someone not make a point or offer opinion without it tunring into a row?! This forum just gets worse, is why I havent been as active recently and why I wont be again now.
Btw I reckon a std R will hold its lomg term value more, the rep is not as short run I dont think as the figgy and was the R just painted where the foggy was slightly different iirc I'd love another SPS
Tetchy - I for one am not arguing, just trying to radicalise you into what is a good sensible investment - I invest in bikes, can't afford to run 16 bikes but would if I could as it wouldn't put too many miles on them anyway. Don't go, you're fun and fluffy, we need your obscure opinions and your going down in the Fantasy Road Race too
Nice one Bradders that was the jist of my post.Wondering how rep SPS/R models hold up in value compared to standard paint SPS/R models. Not everyone buys these bikes as investments and its great to read what people on here having been doing or adding to them and what they are like to ride and own long term.
