Ducati originally announced 200 999R Fila reps to commemorate their 200th win in World Superbike. They made some with grey swing arms and some with black as well as other differences. Anyone know how many of each were made? Was it a total of 200 with the later ones having the black swing arm? I've not seen any with a number on the yoke above 200 yet. There's one on Ebay at the moment with a black swing arm showing number 178.
Well, decided to do some research as no one has replied with knowledge & wisdom. It has thrown up an interesting fact that I didn't know too The Fila R's sometimes advertised as later versions are in fact all the same i.e all Fila R's are first generation R's 2003 spec and none are later versions with changed specifications. The only difference being some had Mag Cam Covers fitted and Black Swing Arms - I had read somewhere the Black Swing Arms were available as an option - so maybe this explains my findings, unless anyone know's different of course! On a Google search I found the following either advertised or on old ads or forums with the following configurations - Grey Swing Arms shown in Bold Type for clarity. Number 0011 has Grey Swing Arm / Alloy Cam Covers Number 0035 has Grey Swing Arm / Alloy Cam Covers Number 0062 has Black Swing Arm / Mag Cam Covers Number 0063 has Black Swing Arm / Mag Cam Covers Number 0131 has Black Swing Arm / Mag Cam Covers Number 0137 has Black Swing Arm / Mag Cam Covers Number 0148 has Black Swing Arm / Mag Cam Covers Number 0155 has Grey Swing Arm / Alloy Cam Covers - Mine Number 0178 has Black Swing Arm / Mag Cam Covers My findings also found info that 70 were exported to the USA. So, in conclusion - looks like they did only produce 200, looks like they were all the same spec, with the up spec later versions being Xerox R's
There seems to be two distinct models, MJ 2003 and 2004, as there are too many differences to be a production process issue. This first model is the original 2003 999r plus paint, as the wheels are the same as the 03 999r and were available in the DP catalogue for use on all models of the 999/749 including biposto models. There were also no model stickers on the side of the fairing. The second picture is the 2004 999r model with the different wheels( still for sale in the DP catalog but only certificated for use on single seat models.) The 04 model has the Ducati 999r model name on the side as well as the welded Swingarm, magnesium parts and carbon exhaust cover on the road silencer.
Great info - but build dates Vs spec will prove everything - plaque numbers could have been jumbled but build date Vs Black Arm / Mag Covers / Wheels and Sticker formats would indicate if they were two specific build dates or just drip fed. The original press release stated the wheels were magnesium - I imagine cast in the same die's if this was the case to further confuse matters. Anyone got spec, Vs build date Vs plaque number info. It is strange that if the numbers were in sequence the majority of bikes appear to be the supposed later type yet the build date Vs numbers appear to say most should be early
Hmm I think we have been here before, I don't thing the wheels are magnesium as I have a set of mag wheels for the 999 in the old wide spoke format, and the rear sprocket mounting is different from standard and also the magnesium clout can b seen from the brake disc side on the hub as it was unpainted. Also I actually bought a 999r Fila in 2004 and it was the 03 model, and I can assure you the wheels were just painted standard R wheels, as the dealer took them off the bike while it was in the showroom and sold them and ordered the replacement wheels from the spares catalogue as they where available as a set during 2003-4 time. I canceled my order because of this as I found it rather cheeky
I too have my doubts - but the press release did say this. I didn't think they made the wheels at all in Mag? Any photo's of the differences would be appreciated! Do you have the info for yours still as mentioned above?
I will have a dig around for my old bill of sale, although I do remember screwing one up and tossing it at the dealer when the bike was on stands after he sold the wheels and some carbon parts off of it lol
Here is a picture of my magnesium rear wheel, 6'' rather than a 5.5. The end of the hub on the brake disc side is non painted material, and also the sprocket carrier hub is gold colour and non standard Fitment with different Cush drives attachment. Over here in Germany the older 999 magnesium wheels are not Tüv tested and 'can't' be used on the road, so when I picked this volume up I was advised of the mag wheels fitted.
