Lewes is not to bad as a place to go out in the evening, for a pub crawl etc, couple pubs have bands, as roads go, yes a few ok roads lots of traffic, but you need to move up towards Ashdown forest for better roads, I only live about 6 miles away
I live about 12 miles away in Eastbourne. Lewes is good for pub crawls as most pubs are decent (in an old man sort of way - you're in beer territory not for lager-boys). Very little else there though. Traffic is a nightmare at rush hour as routes in and out are limited - but there is Culfail tunnel if you have loud pipes! Parking is shite. Brighton is full of wannabes in my experience (worked in Brighton for over a year and Hove for 8 years). Might as well live in London, same grief but more upside. The only decent pub I've ever found was the Evening Star by the railway station but even that can be a bit "student". There are many good roads but you'll always have to head east. Most from around here head over to the Rye area as there's much less traffic. Watch out for plod on sunny Sundays - they tend to have heavy days when they all come out then nothing for a while. They also have pretty decent plain clothes bikes around here, 'blades etc. and will follow you for quite a while before getting a marked bike to pull you over. NEVER let an unknown bike follow you in Sussex! Notable bike haunts are Wessons Café in Horam and The Strand Quay in Rye. What else do you want to know?
We took to using the cafe at the railway station in Rye once the excellent chuck-wagon outside Icklesham shut down. We gave up using the café at the Strand Quay a few years ago when they charged us £6 for breakfast and a cuppa was extra, we're not all made of money down South! Don't think the station café opens Sundays but we try to ride Saturdays anyway. I must admit I've only been to Wessons once as it's just too close to be worth getting the bike out for!
I think Wessons is 40 ish miles from me and Rye 55 ish so its a nice ride out, Are you talking the cafe that is right opposite carpark where all the bikes park? Mate of mine used to waitress in there will have to find out if she still does.
Yep, that's the café, just over the zebra crossing. When we used to ride out in the evenings when I used to work more local, Rye used to be our standard "chip run" to the Kettle of Fish on the other side of the roundabout. Happy days, it will be great if I ever get a job nearer home again....one day...hopefully... It's amazing how many speed limits have been lowered on that route in recent years, despite barely any accidents historically. I must admit that the "fast" (only 60mph obviously) bends between Udimore and Rye are epic! They're so good there's now a roundabout as you enter Rye to help you turn around and have another go!
How considerate of the local high ways authority best spent tax payers money ever Been out that way a few times but couple of years back now very nice roads and round by Maresfield and Buxted too
