Cat D write off

Discussion in 'Ducati General Discussion' started by Pierre 66, Aug 24, 2012.

  1. Would you buy one or more to the point, would you buy a Ducati cat D?

It`s only meant to be cosmetic damage, not structural. The cat D status can`t ever be removed from the bike but, the insurance companies don`t penalise you because of it. You get a cheap(er) bike. I`ve seen a couple of 749`s, similar year and mileage, one`s a repaired cat D, nearly £800 difference in price.
Seems like a win/win situation but I`m still sceptical and don`t think I`d buy one.

    Tell me I`m wrong.

  2. A mate of mine bought a cat d Ducati 900ss around about 1998, can't remember the cost, but it was cheap as chips, all that was wrong with it was the side panel was missing and the rear seat unit was scuffed with a crack in the rear lense, got the missing pannel, replaced the broken bits and still has the bike to this day, it was cosmetic damage that was uneconomical to repair, so he's won won on that deal, if your gonna keep it long term I think you can,t go wrong, but some people think the worst about it, most cat d's are cosmetic I guess due to the price of original panels from the dealer.

  3. Id buy a 1098 as a cat D and convert it straight into a track bike, but that could just be me

  4. absolutely - it takes VERY little damage to cat D a bike. It will be cheaper, but you have to remember it will be cheaper / harder to sell on again. Its a very good way onto a newer / higher spec bike than your budget would otherwise dictate.

  5. As I see it, assuming you can repair it easily, the only downside is potential sell-on price which if it's cheap enough in the first instance or is a 'keeper' then this is irelevant - I would certainly buy one if the bike/price was right.

  6. I'd take a Cat D...if the price was right.

It'd not go in the living room as a display piece but, I'd use one.

  7. Cat D or C asap if price is correct.

  8. I'd look for a Cat D if I ever wanted a track bike

  9. Well I was looking at selling mine ..... Only to find out its a cat c since 09 wtf ?????? So embarrassing phone call to the dealer to cancel !!!! Butch is not happy !!!!!!!!!

  10. The 848? Did you have no inkling when you bought it? Surely the insurance company would have known?

  11. The trouble bought a cat d honda cbr125 to learn on, made sense as one less thing to worry about if she dropped it. I`m pleased to say she didnt but she bought it very cheap, it served its purpose and was an easy sell later on. I`d happily buy another one if the price was ok.

  12. Looks like I was wrong. You live, you learn.

Apparently, 30% cheaper is a ballpark price so I suppose quite a saving.
I`ve also read it`s not just cosmetic damage. If a bike is stolen with the keys then recovered, totally undamaged but the insurance company has already paid out then this would also become a cat D write off.

  13. Can someone explain Cat D and cat C to me? Don't live in the country so not sure what the rules are. But it would be useful to know - I might one day buy a bike in the UK again - can't rule it out.

What are the rules around write-offs?

  14. Cat b = break only
Cat c = repairs out price vehicle value and is normally structural this would need a VIC check if it was repaired
Cat d = repairs out price the insurance company threshold ie 60% of the value some insurers are different to others
Cat x = vehicle had been stolen and the insured had been paid out before the vehicle was recovered this would normally be with very minor damage ie scratches etc

  15. Easier to read this Glidd, I`m no expert. Motorbike insurance Write-off Categories explained

I`d seen a cat D Ducati that was £800 cheaper than an equivalent model and just wondered if it really was a bargain.
I usually go with the "if it seems to good to be true, it usually is" train of thought.

  16. And you won't go far wrong

  17. Yep :upyeah:.

I remember getting a phone call a few years ago saying I`d won a luxury castle in Romania, hadn`t entered any comps but all I needed to give them was a few personal details, yeah, right. The guy on the phone couldn`t believe I wasn`t interested, wonder how many he did get?

If your ever in Romania and you see an empty luxury castle, that`ll be mine, call in, mi casa es tu casa :upyeah: .

  18. You are wrong.

I bought a Ducati Cat D write off last year.
It was 40% less than from the dealer and cost me about £150 to repair. Low mileage, excellent condition, nice Termi's etc.
Couldn't believe the bargain I got!

  19. As with any bike you have to have a good look with a cool head.Just because a bike isnt on the register DOESNT mean its not been in an accident etc.Its just not been repaired thru the insurance. As for buying a cat c/d.Deffo.My last bike had been repaired, hads it over 10 years.Cracking bike.
