Fork rake

Discussion in 'Ducati General Discussion' started by Kage, Aug 25, 2012.

  1. I'm looking into changing my fork rake from street to race. I understand I also need/should change the triple clamps for ones with an offset of 27mm. Can anyone suggest a excellent aftermarket triple clamp supplier. I've only found one in the US. Also, won't the change in fork angle push my clipons away from me. Are there clipons that position the controls closer to the rider.

    Any advice, much appreciated.

  2. Are you planning to use the bike on track only?

  3. Planning the odd track day. Probably next year though. I know there's warnings of not doing for street riding, but on alot of the forums peeps are recomending it. As I'm finding it a bit slow coming from 600's and a few 748's I want to quicken it up. My suspension has already been set up by ron down at pro twins, so the bike feels plush beneath, but it's also feels heavy and slow. Longer clipons is an option, even a 180 section rear tyre may help. What do you think?

  4. What bike is it?

  5. 2003 999s

  6. I think a 180 rear made a huge difference to my 998 and I certainly wont be going back to a 190.

  7. Yes, I think that'll be my first mod. I'm sure I'll get positive results. I read that my rear ride height will need changing as the reduced width changes the dia. even though the other measurements are the same. I'll do some measurements before and after.

  8. Hi,i own an '06 999s & like u had it set up at Pro Twins by Rob,that worked for me but I also found it a pig to turn...I tried the steeper rake but found it unstable so returned it to stock(24.5 degrees), even on track so I started 'fiddling'...I fitted Michelin Power Pures, inc. a 180/55 rear, dropped the front & now have 3 lines showing on my ohlins forks but still found her sluggish to turn..I found my ride height adjuster to be seized so changed the thing & icreased height to 290mm instead of 285(standard)...
Hey f..kin presto, now she goes where I ask.The bike rides quite tall but being 6ft this is fine for me..
I looked at the offset triples but glad I saved my dosh as she rails just fine for my speed(inters)...
    Good luck

  9. Thanks allsorts. That's good information. The 290mm measurement-is this the length of the height adjuster. Also, did you leave the front forks showing 3 rings? I've read lowering the triple clamp through the forks can actually slow the handling as you are lowering the centre of gravity. A higher cog will aid with tipping in.

Im going to do the 180 tyre though and look at the rear ride height too. One step at a time though.

Thanks for your help and advice.

  10. Yes,the 290mm is from centre to centre of ride height adjuster rings & as u say do 1 adjustment at a time, note your findings before trying the next step..
I think the forks are now at 2 1/2 rings showing.
It works for me but u may push that much harder & need the 30mm clamps,it would be good to follow your progress on here...

  11. The tyre on a 999 was 190x55 which makes the tyre depth 104.5 mm
The tyre it should have had is 180x55 which gives a depth of 99 mm
That makes the radia difference of 2.75mm you will never feel the difference so dont raise the ride height because of tyre size .

In fact section 8 , A renowned set up specialist, suggest that you lower it to 280mm.

  12. Have you ever read some of the threads about this gentleman on .ms?

  13. I haven't read any of those threads, Andy. What, briefly, are they saying about the guy? If you'd be so kind.

  14. What like this.
I think that I recall that there was some dodgy machining done on tripple clamps bought from them but I cant remember anything detrimental about there set up advice.

[TD="class: alt1, bgcolor: #EFEFEF"]i'd agree with the op,section 8 setup did wonders my xx9.shure i could throw money at more suspention parts and mods, but setting up as per the section 8 reccomendations made the world of difference on a bike that was already known to be rock steady through the corners.

  15. I did stage 2 a few years ago and like it. A 180 rear is good too but I now have 190. Will go back to 180 when tyres are fkd.
