As above. It should be getting collected wednesday, but first its currently with Chris at cjs for a final day on the dyno, in the last month its had a stainless front section and aif filters fitted. Reason: other half has let me keep my ktm 525 so i have 2 bikes of roughly the same style and seeing as ill never get my money back on that, i though id sell the hyper on....im still very 50 50 as the ride to Louigi saturday morning was amazing....induction noise, masses of torque and thats with the fueling right out! But im a stand up bloke and said id sell it, but it needs to be right before it goes and the mot is tuesday, so he should get it in better shape than when i owned it! So, moving forward....ive had this conversation with gimlet about what im looking for: naked....for me that will be my perfect garage. Supermoto (ktm525), naked (inser bike here) and sports (rsv4 factory). And thats the problem....which one....my short list is... 1. sf1098s. Plus points....its a duc, shape, looks, noise...everything i like downside.....alot of money for a 5 year old bike and theres not many out there at the moment... 2. Bmw s1000r Plus points....looks, massive feature list, no bad reviews that ive read, 9k will get me a 14 plate bike (the sporty one as well) so really good value for money. downside....too much electronics to do basic maintenance myself? Not the torque of the sf...one of my favourite things about the hyper. 3. Z1000 plus points.....cheapest of the 3, looks, love the angular look, very small, short and stocky, i like small bikes. downsides....no electronics, ground clearance, slowest of the 3, stock exhaust looks awful. So there i am....stuck, not really sure what to go for...theres no sf's close by (im in bristol) kawasaki shop is willing to let me have a test drive and not contacted dick lovett (local bmw dealer) yet....off you all go!
To be honesy, sticking with your current suasion, id go for the SF1098s. The beemer needs dealer history and maintenance, and the kasawaki :Watching: will be "soft" for want of a better word, it will be going backwards for you after having the Hyperstrada knowing how they like to act the maggot ! The beemer looks ok, ( and not just saying ) when I seen one a few weeks ago i just walked by it. Done nothing for me really. And IL4's are pretty much all the same anyway :Headphone: No doubt a great bike but mehh, wouldnt be for me. Nakeds are all about character etc.... Yup the SF1098s, no question.
Be patient. When the 15 plate bikes start going out the door there'll be sell-ons and trade-ins to get the S/H market moving. All sorts of things will start appearing.
Hyper. The world won't end if you say no to some random bloke. Buy him a bottle of Scottish or something, he'll find another.
I don't know. A Hypermotard isn't the same thing as a supernaked. The SF and the BMW have genuine but accessible sportsbike performance with a less extreme riding position. They retain the sportsbike gene but are easier to live with. All-rounders with a sharp edge. The Hyper may be a barrel of laughs but its no sports bike, nor really an all-rounder. I can see where CS's coming from. If you've already got a supersports bike and a supermoto in the garage and want something that's all-day capable but retains the spirit of the other two, a supernaked fits the bill perfectly. Personally I'd discount the Z1. They're good value but IMO not in the same league as the other two. Comfysofa, I think you really should test ride both the S1000 and the SF, proper two hour rides and preferably on the same day. Riders may be able to help. Isn't the Bridgewater branch a BMW as well as a Ducati dealership? They're pretty amenable about used test rides. Check out the BMW on other forums. I don't know whether there's any reliability issues. The SF is a proven bike and the 1098 is a sound engine. And you do have the best independent Ducati specialist on your doorstep...
I sold my 1098 SF for a new Tuono and before I did I rode every super-naked I could think of. The S1000R; fast, plastic, soulless. The Streetfighter would be my choice here everytime. They are a lot of money for what is relatively old tech (cf KTM SDR, S1000R, APRC etc) but its still got the fantastic Ducati mid-range punch, dry clutch and mystical character which keeps us all here.
Having owned many Superdukes, 950supermotos, XT660's etc, its not the engine/performance that's the issue with nakeds, be they Pseudomoto's, supernakeds or whatever you want to name them, it's wind blast. Over 80mph all these bikes become that much of a pain in the arse and plain 'hanging on' that they're pointless whether they'll do 100mph top end or 150mph top end. I've had Multiple Superdukes and Tuonos which are both 140mph + bikes, but DAMN they're a pain over 100mph and you're just holding on wishing it were over mostly. Hence why IMO the Hyper is more suited, the fact it doesn't WANT to do 140mph, means that you don't either...so you just use and accept in the <100mph bracket..
Thanks for all the replies....first and foremost - its not the speed...its the riding position. The hyper is IMO just the same as the ktm525 from a ride position point of view, that's the reason for the change plus as I said - its my 3 fave type of bikes, supermoto, naked, sports. The thing as I say that draws me towards the SF is Exclusivity - theyre pretty rare now.... Sound Ride position Power Simplicity Support - Louigi motos is 15 mins from my house - Riders (I could walk there if I needed to) But then the BMW has All the electronics Cruise control Smooth I think it does look nice Its brand new Wind speed doesn't bother me atall. Low down grunt the hyper reigns top out of all and I will really miss it but ive got the opportunity to own something I always aspired to...the SF but the BMW has come out since and does have me thinking....ie... Keep it coming...nice to hear what everyone has to say - something I may have overlooked...
That's a fair point. However the SF is the least hard work at speed of any unfaired bike I've ridden. You're right about the sub-100mph bracket. The BMW IMO, doesn't have as much to offer as the SF in that department. The S1000 does want to go 140mph+. That's the zone where the engine starts to makes sense and where it really wants to be. But the ergonomics are much harder work at speed than those of the SF. And the Ducati engine has vastly more character. There is so much punch, presence and general sensory involvement that sub-100mph riding is always hugely entertaining. You don't feel you need to ride through that zone to get to where the action is. There's action everywhere. But if you want a high speed blast as well, it's more than willing.
id have to agree with that....theres nothing better on the hyper than watching the reservoirs vibrating away when you open it up at 30mph in 3rd!.....I think im swinging towards the SF....ive got a choice at the moment within my price range of 2, both the same price one is an 09, red, 6k, with full termi system - private sale, id have to ride it home from the Sheffield area to Bristol... the other is a shop one, black 10 plate but could be just the slip on 8k miles but open clutch basket and dp pressure plate (not that I cant do that to the other one...) - can get it delivered...so rich tells me at Louigi the black ones are a bit more rare but I still like the red...both are "S"'s The other thing is ownership, there is something about owning one (a Ducati) and also if I didn't have one I wouldn't (to a certain extent) be on here.....I did look on the s1000r forum and it doesn't "feel" the same....
Well, Gimlet has had one and he said he made that mistake...not saying a ST is bad or anything...personally (for me) im not sure what it is about the ownership of a Triumph that makes me not want one...that for me is enough to cross it off my list plus - theyre pretty old hat now...at least the SF has some electronics on it to speak of...and im not saying that I have to have something with electronics but if ive got the chance to have it then it'd be nice...
I prefer the red SF. But the black look pretty cool too. Especially the S with the gold Ohlins twinkly bits. If you buy one fitted with Termis its good to have all original parts as well. You can return the bike to stock and you've got an extra ECU to play with.
No towbar...doesn't matter - just going to call my mate now....if I have to drive it back that doesn't matter (almost looking forward to it...) Hes got a trailer but no tow bar.....looks like ill be getting the train up and the bike down...!
The plan will be to get it to Chris at CJS as soon as but hand it over with a stock ecu for him to mod and the flog the DP one...
If you don't mind the faffing about and can leave me a car, I'm more than happy. I only use it for 5 miles to pick my lad up from school. Although you would have to drive a Kia !
