After a lively discussion with a mate of mine about the mileage on my 999 ('06 8600 miles) he declared that it could have been "clocked" because the mileage is "far too low for a nine year old sportsbike"...cheek! I must explain he is a Fireblade owner , 2007 model with 27,000 miles on her. I thought y'all would be interested in a bit of non-scientific data gathering using Ebay and Biketrader 999's and 749's for sale, comparing age with mileage (all done to prove him wrong). So about 30 odd examples were compared and the average yearly mileage for all was.... 934 miles per year... The highest average was a 2005 model with 14343 on the clock - average of 1434 per year , lowest was a 2003 with 3092 on the clock - average mileage 257. So mine with 8600 on the clock has an average of 955 per year ... just a tad higher the the overal average of 934 miles per year ... QED. I really must get out more !
My '06 has 27'150 miles. Quite a disappointing total after 8 seasons, but I don't get out as much on it as I did.
Good lads - that's the spirit! Use em! That's exactly what I'll be doing this year with a few long distance treks in mind throughout the summer!
28,000m. 55 plate facelift base, bought late 07 with 4000 on. Sorned for 1 year as 2 other bikes in use.
MY03 999s, from new (Feb '04), with 5½ years SORN'd, so I have run it for around six years ... 39,350 mi. Some years it didn't see a lot of action even though it was taxed, so I've been a bit slack.
I guess my real point was that the mileages above were what I would expect from bikes that are around 10 years pld and more. I was surprised that my (unscientific) survey showed that the bikes currently for sale (ok I charted nikes that were advertised about 2 months ago) were so low, with an average of less than 1000 miles a year. Mind you if I look on Ebay now they are still low milers with only one going over 10,000. Odd?
My 999R's have 1500 and 4500 - unashamedly part of my décor and pension - my 05 999S had 7600 I think when I sold it last year.
Bought my 05 at 4200 miles. 5k a year later, aim is to do more than that this season.. Plan is to run it till it pops...engine refresh and return to as new.... Thinking also of getting another to "keep the mileage down". Don't know what yet, something saying " go older"...
I also have my 750 which I bought in 2003. 26,000 mi, with nearly 10 years spent in the garage - finally got around to fixing it this year.
'04 999s - 15,500 . SORNed for last 6 months and maybe a few more yet . previous owner did 350 in two years.
I think there are two reasons for this. Those that use there ducati bikes regularly find they are really good bikes and reliable. But once you put the miles on em they become more difficult to sell.Seems everyone is looking for mint v low miles examples and think ducatis will grenade themselves once over say 12,000 miles lol. This seems to get even worse with SPS and R models. I find as a buyer (to use bike not collect) I go for dukes with miles on the clock and regular use as these ultra low miles examples sat unused for very long periods are a nightmare to get running right again and lots of labour & replacement parts needed. Nice to see some of the 749/999 series getting well used .My older desmoquattro is a 34,000 now and runs better than when I purchased it with 13,000 mls on the clock.
That's good to hear matt#corse. I'm the same in having a suspicion of very low mileage examples for two reasons, 1) As you say standing still - even if well covered - for long periods can do no favours to various internal seals etc. I once saw a low mileage Triumph Daytona that looked immaculate but once started began to pee oil from a crankcase seal. The seller must of been aware of this because I spied an oil patch on his garage floor and his dust cover was spattered at the same point. The chancer was trying to unload a dog AND he wanted top dollar for condition and low mileage...grrr 2) Of course you buy an ultra low miles bike for top money and you feel guilty for putting extra miles on it - so you end up using it for decoration - what a waste!
