Hoping to get some answers to a couple of questions. When we discovered the oil gallery plug had come loose on my early 900 motor, we deicided that it would be a full rebuild job as Rich at Louigi Moto will not just cobble a motor back together, so we were looking at a fairly big job. Fortunately Rich had a later 900 motor that had been blueprinted but not used so we stuck my barrels and pistons on it, Rich overhauled the heads, and we started to put it back together, and that is when we hit a snag. The later engine uses a higher output alternator and we couldn't get my original alternator cover back on. Not a big deal as we have the proper cover for the later engine, I just need to spray it up and we'll get it fitted. So my two questions: Will my original reg/rec be ok or will I have to fit a later one to cope with the higher output? My biggest concern is regarding the bodywork. The early alternator cover is narrower ie: sticks out less than the later cover. I know the LHS panel is different on the early bikes, but want to know if it was altered because of the alternator cover or for some other reason. In short will my early LHS side panel fit on a motor with the later alternator cover fitted? I can't just check it as the body panels are at the spray shop, plus the front subframe's not fitted yet and putting bodywork on at this stage would be a pain.
The later panels are diferent but only in that they have an extra cooling vent and possibly some sound deadening on the inside Steve B
When you say later 900 motor do you mean a pre 98 carby motor or a later injection motor Gilps ? Either way your body work will be fine, there's plenty of room in there  However there is even a difference in the alternator covers used on the carby models. The mk1 superlight engine and probably all the '92 model SS's have the early type cover which has a flatter profile and the later '93 - '98 ones have a cover with a slightly domed section to it (about 10mm deeper). I'm pretty sure they aren't interchangable without a fair bit of work, I could be wrong as I haven't had to swap any over. Sorry can't be any more help. Ian.
It's a pre 98 carby, probably about 94 as its engine no. 33000 ish. My original is 1000 and something. You are spot on, the later casing is more domed at the alternator and you definitely can't fit an early case on there. Thanks for the info on the space available. I was starting to get worried.
You could fit a Benelli Sei engine in the space available..............if you fitted the half fairing... AL.
Well, they were wide......but not as wide as my mates K1600 BMW engine.....F me, that bike is massive.........in fact, I have to ask.....is it actually necessary for a bike to have that capacity, unless your name is Henk Vink?. AL.
I've just realised that my lack of knowledge of all things alternator has just become evident, so what are the names of the components. Am I right in thinking that the bundle of wires on the outside is the stator? What is the name of the big magnetic spinny thing? I understand how an alternator works, well what I remember from school anyway, but if I know the names of the components then I will be able to talk at length in future about alternators and sound knowledgable. Thanks
They wern't as wide as the CBX or Z1300. They also went some way to dispell the theory that all Italian bikes handled.
you were kind of there Gilps - the stator has the field windings and is stationary and the weighty flywheel type drum is the magnetic rotor containing permanent magnets. AC is produces for ignition but can be rectified to DC for lights etc.
There's a name from the past, used to watch him and his multi engined kawas at the pod............. hoping he'd lose.
