Gonna need to get a few bolts for project 999 and i've been eyeing up the titanium stuff. I was wondering if it's worth going for titanium if you're only doing a few bolts or just stick to the standard ones? Also, are there any bolts that shouldn't be replaced with titanium ones?
Not sure what the prices of titanium bolts are compared to standard, but if you plan on riding out in damp weather pay the extra, standard bolts seem to melt at the hint of damp
Corrosion was the main thing i'm thinking of as the bike will be going out when the sky water is falling. Very true I'm not gonna go the weight saving route or else i'd end up buying carbon fairing/tank, carbon wheels, titanium exhaust... Yep! Been looking on there for replacement bolts and that's what gave me the titanium idea.
I've replaced every single bolt to Ti on my 1099 project... Never felt the urge to put them on a scale to measure the difference, cause weight reduction just wasn't one of my goals... But I can recall the feeling of a full bag with all the bolts for the complete bike... Light, very light!!!! But why I bought them: when I started this project of mine, I made myself a promise to and never make money related concesions! I kinda wrote myself a blank check to build my own dreambike.... I just didn't want to hold back on anything, bot even on something like bolts... And Ti just simply look better... ;-)
aluminium are lighter and cheaper. Engine cases, fuel cap, brake n clutch mc's, clip-ons, battery box, anything stress free are all changed on mine to alu. the rest titanium
Are the coloured bolt kits normally done in aluminium or cheap crap? Any bike that had coloured bolts that i've worked on always ended up snapping.
totally depends what you want them for. If you don't understand why you'd need them then you probably don't and follow Cranker's good advice and go ally.
Ti for calipers, brake discs, suspension parts, axle nuts, sprocket carrier, upper and lower triples, subframe, rearsets, dzus qr's( dont use alu ones - they're shit). Avoid colored sparkly ones - plain or black look ok (same goes for alu ones - colours look naff) Though there are 6 gold cap heads on my bike :Banghead:
If they are dzus QR type - dont undo them too often. They gall on the receptical/female part. As for the colour - best get dark glasses
