When I had an SS, the guy who sold it to me gave me a pair of spare plugs and told me that it was prone to fouling and that I should carry these extra plugs with me. Sure enough, it did give trouble and I did need the plugs. However, I had read about coil kits you could get from America that cured this problem and also gave better throttle response and low down grunt due to the stronger spark. I therefore forked out an arm and a leg to import these things from California, along with some Magnecor plug leads. It wasn't so much the price that was the problem, it was the shipping, import duty, VAT and handling charge that were the killer. However, I duly fitted the kit and it worked a treat. No more fouling, a much steadier idle and better throttle response as well, so I was a happy bunny I could even trickle along in gear without having to slip the clutch all the time, as I had so much less snatching. Why is he telling us this I hear you ask?? Well, thanks to @Exige you should now be able to import these kits without having to pay through the nose for individual shipping, import tax, handling charge etc, which should make them much more cost-effective.
Thanks, Old Rider, for this post. It's a bit of a bugbear for me, the idle on my 999S and this might be a solid cure. And Elise to the rescue again? @Exige what has happened to you? You used to be so annoying! (Sign me up for a set. )
I have some coming with my first order of belts - price should be much better! I will be setting up an Ebay shop but hope to be in a position to offer a Forum discount too once cleared with Rob
They are Coil Kits for older Ducati's, yours I'm afraid is too modern and uses stick coils, but I think you might know this? From annoying to nearly useful in such a short time :Wideyed:
Loz, I put this post in the SS section because these coil kits are for the SS (and Monster). The 999 has a completely different system. I managed to improve my 999's idle by fitting Iridium plugs. These will work with a much bigger plug-gap than conventional plugs, so should deliver a steadier idle and better throttle response. No more actual peak bhp though.
Sorry, I wasn't paying enough attention. Yes, I need stick coils for the T9. But also have an SS engined 750 so it's all good

I had 3ohm mini dyna coils available from TTS at silverstone. 120 quid all in, and they can make up HT leads as well.
All in, was that with the plug caps and HT leads? I have some CCW Exactfit Coils coming over which include these and spark plugs as well. How long ago did you buy them?
this was only in the last 18 months. DOn't go to their ebay shop, just ring them. The price was coils only. I had magnecor leads anyway but their HT leads won't be that much. oh and no plugs.
Is it all types of SS coils that give the problem, mine are the ones you can't change the leads on and as far as I can see are original (bikes a 91 with 50,000 miles) and the plugs look fine when I take them out. Just planning for the future, ones bound to stop working soon!!
If you have no fouling, you don't strictly need more powerful coils but they should give you a steadier idle and better low speed pick-up plus smoother slow speed running with less snatch.
Thanks for that, I must say idle is fine as is but very, very snatchy at lower speeds. Once I've finished spending money on the 400 then I'll have a look at this, thanks for the help
@Exige are these for carby SS only or also IE (or did IE bikes end up with updated, better, coils)? Thanks.
Not sure, these are the model years listed on the CCW Website if that helps? Otherwise I'm sure someone will know on here Ducati Supersport 900 (1991-1998) Ducati Supersport 800 (2003-2007) Ducati Supersport 750 (1991-1998) Ducati Supersport 620S (2003)
Aah, cheers, mine's a 1999 IE model so looks like it's probably a different coil. Unless someone else knows better?
