For the last 15,0000kms I've listen to piston slap on my600ss. When I first bought the bike the noise disappeared after it was warm. Now, the noise changes from being loud and bell like to loud and rhythmic. I wasgoing to change cylinders and pistons when it started using oil but I’m stillwaiting and now I’m taking pity on my neighbours having to listen to the racketwhile I’m warming it up during a winter’s morning. I bought a set of new cylinders and pistons cheap on eBaywith an idea of replacing both horizontal and vertical pots. I bought …….. unwiselybecause it turns out that they are the pre 1998 forged ones given to pistonslap in the first place. It is the 1998 cast pistons with the telltale castingmarks in the back of the pistons, (ie join marks and orange peel finish, so I’vebeen told) that would have solved my problem. Rather than waste any more money I’m now intending to replacethe horizontal cylinder and piston, only, in the knowledge the problem willreoccur. Hopefully 15,000 to 20,000kms down the track. Changing the cylinder and piston will stretch my knowledge having notdone it in the past. Hints, tips and comments would be appreciated. Steve
Have you done cylinder and head changes on any bikes engines in the past?. Ducati heads are easy to remove as you don'h have a timing chain to worry about, horizontal(front) cylinder, could be done easily enough with the engine in the bike, but i'm not so sure about the vertical(rear) cylinder, I have only ever done this work with the engine on a bench, and to be honest if I was going to do it I would favour taking the engine out.
I have the same problem I've also been told it's the cast pistons. It does not seem to affect the performance of the motor and I have done several 1000 miles with it clatering away, just embarracing when you stop as people think it's going to fall apart
Most class B DD bikes seem to have piston slap and get abused at every round never seen one fail due to that yet
Meh, my 900 slaps a little when cold (25000 miles) but quietens down when warm. Got used to it, but have found different brands of ear plugs make the most difference
