Vin Check

Discussion in 'Other Bikes' started by Birdie, Apr 10, 2015.

  1. I have the chance to buy another bike for a project, it has been stood a while and the owner has no log book or number plate and never has had. It has lights, indicators and horn so I presume it has been registered in the past.
How do I check weather it has any previous history, obviously my main concern is, has it been stolen.
If i get the frame number and engine number.
Can I ring the DVLA for this info or could I go into my local police station and ask them? @andyb
    Any help appreciated.
    Steve

Just rang the Police very helpful but can't help, they suggest DVLA.

  2. DVLA no use at all, I have to fill in a V62 with a cheque for £25 and a letter describing my dilemma, they then might tell me whether it has been stolen but will not issue a log book as I am not the owner.
I have now put the ball in the sellers court and asked him to send the V62 and get a log book otherwise I walk away.

  3. Thanks Al, I have been round in circles on the DVLA web site this morning with no luck without a reg no. I have the engine and frame numbers but they don't help without filling in this V62.

  4. Try your friendly MOT tester.......I believe they have a computer search facility which might throw up something on engine / frame numbers.

    • Thanks Thanks x 1
  5. If its never been registered then the DVLA will have no record of it. I have a HPI account I might be able to check via the VIN but again without it ever being registered I might fall at the first hurdle

  6. I amin the same boat, a frame opprtunity as a sprare at good prce not v5 etc, have found if difficult to id if its nicke, not wrridabout recovered orwritten off its atrack bike, jus wouldnt fancy a knock on the van door some day. If you find a solution I'd interested

  7. Clutching at straws I did think it might not have been registered before, having spoke to the owner this morning he has had it about ten years so is not the first owner, the bike is about a 1984 model.

  9. I found out about the search facility when I first went to my current MOT tester........he couldn't find the bike as it should be known: 'Ducati Supersport'.

It didn't appear using the registration number!

It was eventually found listed as 'Ducati SS Sport'.

He found it using the frame number.

  10. If you buy a bike and its nicked, they can take the bike.

If you buy a frame and its nicked, they could take the frame.

What happens if you buy a frame, drop an engine in, wheels, etc, etc then then it turns out its nicked? Do they just take the frame or EVERYTHING?

  11. It looks like the bike I am after has more than likely never been registered, HPI on the frame number comes back clear on all counts other than vehicle description. Thanks to Paul (Mr C)

  16. "They" are probably just poor imitations of something else...

  17. I assume the police would recover it.
