As some of you are aware Ive jumped from a Hypermotard to a z1000. Bike is 7 months old and ridden by someone who knew nothing about bikes or looking after them....this one has been ridden through the winter and from what I can see has had the bodywork wiped over now and again....so now it looks like this...so far ive: Changed the bars for renthal fat bars. put a tail tidy on. Paddock Stand bobbins Ripped a load of stuff off so I could clean it....the underside was caked in crud from the road, oil, and when I got it...nicely dried and crusty salt Removed garish tank pad/stickers Fitted stainless steel exhaust studs Removed flapper valve motor and cables. Im waiting for: Arrow race headers Bar end mirrors integrated rear light Tyres (Metzeler M7RR's) Hel Lines front indicators (very small) Ive got waiting to go on... Vance & Hines brawler tail pipes. Theres nothing wrong with it, just needs a clean, and a generous helping of stainless steel fittings to go around the bottom of the bike initially..... Before... Currently... Away on hols for the week so hopefully when I get back my section of the office should be full of bike bits....yey....
Bloody hope so...ive only ridden once to get it home....then the ocd kicked in! Having said that the once i have ridden it, it was really nice...and that was bog stock....
I'm gonna have to hide soon then..... I still haven't recovered from the last discount I had forced out of me!!! Looks good fella
Cheers for all the help over the last couple of days Andy (including the loan of the monstrously large allen key for the front wheel!) Moving on - to the pics...! Tail Tidy - for an older zed but re-drilled to fit mine...otherwise fine. Renthal fat bars - slightly straighter than stock.... the usual plastic coating to be done....various bits of pressed and folded metal. Stainless steel stud set... Arrow race header system.... Integrated rear light. Anyway - all in all looks pretty good now....not been out on it yet but should do tonight...I didn't think anything could actually be louder than my hypermotard but this is....for the first time in my life I think im gonna have to change the pipes to something quieter....
Confirmed: fuck me the pipes are too loud, had to order some more with removable baffles.... The hyper was positively quiet compared to this....!
Cheers damo...im really pleased with it....the stock pipe that came off was 22kilos! The new system was 6 kilos....quite the weight saving....plus ive been chatting with another lad who has the same setup and just got his dyno'd and has some good gains...hes using a power commander but chris at cjs reckons he can reflash the ecu...riding it the stance feels like im riding the batpod! Just to add he just said hes getting 147 at the wheel which from what i read is about 15% less than whats measured at the flywheel.
Yep - not much is getting past you! - that's why its in the area called......other bikes! Here you go - does this balance it up a bit....
yep - its got a fresh set of supercorsa's on there that have not even turned a wheel plus ive serviced the forks and modded them as per a walkthrough on the aprilia forum...problem is, is ive been on my roof stripping and rebuilding it and my nextdoor neighbours house for the last 3 weekends...so its not even been started up! I don't think ill be getting rid of it for the foreseeable as I couldn't afford a newer on plus, the only other bike I would like would be a panigale but that's way out of my price range...
No problem sir..... Gotta say that Allen key must have worked overtime due to the amount you've got done!!!! Looks very good, dropping the bars makes as massive visual change, looks like the man at the end of the bar! Quiet but don't mess with him!!!
Yeah....the mirrors kinda look like a dobermans ears i thought....really chuffed. Thanks again for the help. still got the hel lines to do, and ive decided to keep the pipes but get some db killers for them heard another one with the same setup with dbkillers in and it sounded nice. Next is either a power commander or remap if chris can do it then probably next year a top end nitron shock or something like that.
On the RSV this morning cupid....and ive gotta say (its a while since ive ridden it) it feels positively massive compared to the zed. On the rsv im on the balls of my feet at a standstill and on the zed flat footed and bent legged, its that small. However this mornings ride on a. brand new SC's and serviced forks was lovely, changing the fork oil and making the settings as per the walkthrough has changed the front end for the better ill say....really nice...the other reason im on the RSV is ive not got the db killers for the pipes yet on the zed and its almost embarrassing to ride (que jokes)....the rsv with an Austin tail pipe I would say is about a quarter of the noise level of the zed.
I'm having a fork overhaul when my SF goes in for its belt service. There's lot of stiction. Unfortunately there are few aftermarket options for the rear shock other than buying an Ohlins TTX. (You'll probably have a lot more choice for the Z if you need it). But the front end could be revalved. For the relatively cheap cost involved I think I'll get it them serviced and have the fluid changed before I start going overboard. You're right, just having decent quality fluid makes a big difference. Most bikes only get cheap stuff to start with and it never gets changed. I'm sure even good fork oil ought to be changed regularly. It lives a hard life.
Well, I don't know if the forks on the SF are the same as the RSV, but, I found a thread (after id rebuilt them - the seals blew) from a bloke that was racing the RSV4 factory in BSB (this is back in 2010) and he posted a thread saying that his mechanics had been experimenting with the stock ohlins setup, and more importantly once theyd got it right they were winning races on the stock forks... Strip the forks down and at the bottom of the forks there's a plasic washer, fish that out and with the spring out, and the outer fork pushed all the way down to the bottom fill with enough oil so its a 150mm from the top, the stock setting is 110mm from the top. Once that's done, reassemble the fork, his settings were: set spring preload to 8.5 turns in! set compression ( this is small bottle bottom of forks ) wind allan bolt clicker all the way in and count out to 12 set Rebound ( this is small allan bolt in the middle of the preload adjuster top of fork leg ) wind all the way in and count out to 12 also Now the above took me a couple of minutes to type out but in reality it took me 4 rebuilds of the forks - once id worked it out and/or read the instructions wrong....end result is really nice though....
I rode the 1199 into work today it was absolute bliss, meeting some friends after work and going for a blast. Just read through Gimlets post. My SF is due a major service at the end of the year so I will get them to do the forks too. Mind you it handles fairly well as it is
