Looks Ok But Unsure About Buying........

  1. having sold my old car I've now got a good budget to get an 848.

I've seen a few I like but one that's caught my eye is as follows, 2011 ego in red, 2500 miles etc

Couldn't get much more info as the seller is of foreign background and it was difficult to get my questions across properly on the phone and as he's 2 1/2 hours away from me I wanted to know as much as possible.

What I do know is it needs a brake lever, why don't people fix these little things?.?

And, he's lost the service book in a house move. I think the plate says in-moto meaning I may be able to track history but do ducati dealers keep service history?

My question really is......at 2500 miles but no provable history is there anything to really worry about if the bike is way below average price. He's already agreed a decent drop in price to reflect the lack of history which would allow enough to add termis etc. I would do a hpi check and I'm ex-motor trade so I know the usual pitfalls but I don't know ducatis well enough to know what to avoid.

    Cheers guys

  2. Where is it advertised ? If it's near me I'm happy to take a look. TBH I'm already suspicious and wondering why it needs a brake lever. 2500 miles isn't unusual for a sports bike but you would need to check the service history through a Ducati main dealer before any commitment. Andy

  3. That's very kind of you, it's in Oxfordshire but I would probably go myself just in case but thanks for the offer.

I suspect it may have been dropped in order to break the end of the lever but if the fairing is ok then easy enough to fix I guess.

I know sometimes things are too good to be true but I suppose sometimes you just come across a bargain that poorly advertised.

  4. Find yourself one closer to home :)

  5. I'd love to but they have all been higher mileage than I'd like or more money than I want to spend.

There's not many dealers down in the South East but I'm happy to travel for the right bike

  6. With Ducati service records being on line and available to every authorised dealer, there is no need to reduce the price because he "mislaid" the service book. It's highly likely it's a con so my advice is walk away and as El T says, look closer to home. Andy

  8. How much are you looking to spend?

  9. I did think that but I also thought perhaps the guy just doesn't realise these things and it's to my benefit.

Im very wary, I like to give people the benefit of the doubt but unfortunately the language barrier makes it very easy for him to give very vague answers. He may be a genuine seller but I just don't know Italian bikes well enough

  10. Thanks so much, I'm starting to go cold on it now if I'm honest, I just couldn't get straight answers as his English wasn't great and I wouldn't want to waste your time

How do you rate the evo compared to the standard model?

  11. I missed a couple of bikes around the £6300 mark and I hadn't sold my car or ridden an 848 at the time, both were white 2008 models with low miles so that's kind of set the bar for me but I guess it really depends what comes up.

I'm a proper fussy bugger and I get a good gut feeling for how a bikes been looked after, there's quite a few within budget but nothing has really jumped out just yet

  12. Not ridden a standard one and mine is a long way from a stock one sorry.

  13. I've had both a standard 848 and now an Evo. The Evo has fantastic Brembo monoblocks which for me a must. If you do end up going for a standard model the monoblocks do come up on ebay for £350-£400

  14. Forget about that bike , carnt speak English , broken lever , lost service book , you haven't even looked at it yet and it already sounds like an un cared for bike .
Buy the right bike to start with ..... don't buy it because it's cheaper than the rest , cheap is fecked and ruff , good luck with your search

  15. There plenty out there with fsh and all levers intact. I'd leave it and be patient.

  16. With teh 848 challenge cup there are a fair number with low miles because they were raced. In itself not a bad thing, but no history would worry me and, tbh, I'd walk away unless it was so cheap and I could afford to relace the motor.

  17. Not much in it to be fair, I have had one 848, owned it for 3 years and loved it, traded in for an evo hmmmm an extra few ponies goes a long way, decided to upgrade and regretted the choice 6 months later, so much so that 18months on I have gone and bought another Evo, this has a full Termi system and boy does it sound nice and goes very well :)

  18. I buy and sell quite a few bikes, mostly Ducatis, I have learnt one thing that I stick to nowadays, IF I CANT PRONOUNCE THE GUYS NAME, THEN HE IS A SCUM BAG. Walk away from that one mate.

  19. Ive just moved house, all important documents as well as everything else in the house was boxed up, never lost any service books for the sport classic, monster or the panigale, things can go a miss on moving but important things you safe guard, to me it just sounds a poor excuse and broken lever, isn't much to buy a new lever these days, as another member says walk away
