I bought an 848 Evo ex-race bike with nothing apart from a key or 2.... First thing I did was take it Donnington and thrash the living daylights out of it.... I then brought it home... And took it to Portimao and thrashed it for 3 days It's a bike...
Thankyou Weeksy, at last the voice of reason. If the seller was asking full price for the bike (and we still don't know exactly what he's asking for it) then I could understand people walking away from it. But if it's a fair bit cheaper, and you don't mind getting your fingernails dirty, chances are you'll end up with a bargain. All it takes is a bit of common sense, and going in without the blinkers.
Why is it not normal ?? Ok I don't keep a spread sheet on everything but do keep all important documents in folders , I can bet a few others on here do the same
True, but better safe than sorry. One 996 I looked at, the owner said the belts had been changed 2000 miles ago. When I checked online against the bikes previous MOT`s, 2000 mile ago was actually 6 years ago. On the one I finally bought, the belts hadnt been done for 3 years, so whilst not drastic, they needed doing. The brake fluid had never been changed in 13 years and most scary of all, whilst I was working on the bike I found that the rear wheel nut was only finger tight. As I too was keen to give the bike a thrashing id ridden it the 60 miles back to mine quite aggressively, so was lucky really.
Oh ayyup , oh yes ..... folders with fancy spring mechanism thingys in't middle of em ,colour coded ....now we are talkin am buzzin a tell thee , Rabbit Stew will go into a frenzy .......
Dear me there are some mugs on here, considering buying a bike with bits missing, no history blah blah blah, must see you coming a mile off ! I've bought and sold almost 40 bikes, this one screams out "wide berth" if ever I saw it, good luck with it !
LOL I've owned more than that in the last 7 years since I promised the wife I'd keep my new R1 for 5 years in the birthing room of our child.
You did know the history and owner of the 848 tho weeksy Surely you just go see it and make your mind up don't you? And if you can't go see it, move on
Kinda, although he'd only owned it for 1 trackday, we knew/know very little about the previous owners apart from the finishing positions in Tri Options cup
No, just trying to give real life advice, to seemingly naive prospective buyers. But fill your boots, let us know what it's like, it's sounds like it's been pampered
Have you really owned them though, you are famed across a multitude of forums for being a billy bullshitter, not completing sales, track days etc. etc. etc. I bet you've not even got an 848 :Bawling: Take a picture of it with today's paper, prove to the global motorcycle forum world that you're not really full of poo, honest . . .
These are exactly the type of bikes I Do buy, bikes that need a bit of care and attention. I get them cheap, give 'em a bit of elbow grease, ride the tits off them, then sell for a profit. I don't expect everyone to do this, in fact I hope they don't, it makes the bikes all the cheaper for me when people like you cower away from them. What I'm saying here is that you and other people are writing off what could be a perfectly good bike, just cos you're too scared to go take a look. It could just as easily be a dog, but I bet it ain't.
Fair enough, suppose if it works out it will be a good buy and you can use it and make a few quid on it after, happy days. I just don't know why someone wouldn't just spruce it up and get decent money for it, but hey ho, we're all different eh . . .
You've changed your tune a bit The bloke who owns it may be mechanically inept - there are plenty here similarly inclined - and if that's the case the mileage is probably genuine. He could be a shyster, but being foreign doesn't automatically make him so. The bent lever could be from a track excursion that's been hidden by refitting the original bodywork - or it may just have fallen off it's stand. It may be a pig, it may be the bargain of the decade. There is no way of telling until you go look at it. But for several people to sit here and say, 'no way, it's obviously crashed/stolen/seized/whatever' without ever having seen the bike is just ridiculous. Oh, and if you open your gambit with 'I have bought and sold almost 40 bikes', you are leaving yourself wide open. 'Almost 40' doesn't even put you in the top 5000 here mate.
