Had the bike for almost a month now and, with 1500 miles under my belt, I'm loving every mile. Before picking her up from the dealers I spent a wee bit of time checking out all the usual add-ons that were available including crash protection which always seems to be one of the first purchases. What struck me though was that many manufacturers often don't show the product fitted on the actual bike or, if they do, it's a close up leaving you wondering what the overall effect the item has on the bike's appearance? I thought it might be useful to start a thread where we could post up actual photos of the different options out there that people have fitted so anyone looking to buy can get a better feel before lightening their wallet? If it's a crap suggestion or has been done before then apologies but.....here goes: Front Engine Guard Having seen Andy's thread regarding the various options now appearing on the market to protect the front cylinder head I opted for Rob's product: Can't speak highly enough of the guard; well manufactured, covers more area than some other products and the option to have 'Multistrada', 'Ducati' and/or '1200' lettering as well just makes it that bit more bespoke. In addition, Rob's a top bloke to deal with who clearly knows how to make a good piece of kit (and no, I didn't get a discount.....yet! :biggrin. Rizoma Crash & Waterpump Protectors I looked around various manufacturers before opting for these: Better shot of the Waterpump protector: Very high quality and I'll hopefully not test their effectiveness but they appealed to me because they also added to the bike's appearance (well I think they do ). Not the cheapest option around for sure but....... End of 1st thread of 2. Next up it's the R&G Shocktube. All the best, Mark.
I've got to be honest I don't find keeping the mutley clean a chore in any way but there are some bits that are more tedious than others; the rear shock being one. When I spotted this offering from R&G it looked right up my street: R&G Shocktube Not too difficult to fit (there are detailed fitting instructions on R&G's website and it takes about 15 minutes all up) and the sock is made of neoprene and secured by hidden cable ties. Maybe not everyone's cup of tea but it works for me especially when you live so close to the coast as I do never mind winter salt. That's my offerings for now but I've just ordered more stuff from Rizoma (I know, there are other manufacturers out there  - maybe someone would oblige by posting some of their pics?) and I'll post up pics when they arrive and are fitted. All the best, Mark.
Nice pictures and a good idea in my view. That Rizoma stuff is real quality, (and real pricey) I guess you get what you pay for.
I must admit I debated about the cost especially regarding the crash bungs but they do look the business and are a bit different from the norm. Sort of sums up the Multi as well I suppose? Mark.
+1 on all counts.....I have reservations with the R&G Shocktube though - (1) I don't like the look, shame to cover up that handsome shock and spring (yeah personal I know;-) (2) Shocks get pretty damn warm when working hard and less efficient as they get 'hot' - I have to wonder whether effectively 'insulating' the shock could be an issue? (with a hugger fitted the shock is not especially vulnerable in any case imho) Cross references: Just a coincidence? Yup, love all the changes, low key "not-in ur face" small improvements. Thats exactly what I would like to do - funds permitting. When u can could u post a couple more pics - of either side of the bike from a distance ? - want to check out the overall effect in some kind of bigger prespective. I discussed the R&G cover with andy at a recent meeting, and took on the two 'disadvantages' : 1. heat by the shock 2. not showing off the yellow ohlins shock in its full glory - not convinced by the heat argument, and with regards to the not showing off I guess the protection/keeping it clean argument over rides it (mine's had a few chips off it when the chain broke off - long story - so it really needs something). like it. bugs
Hi Bugs, Glad you like the look. I'm not a great fan of yellow to be honest so covering it in black suits me fine. Andy's absolutely right as well - it's all down to personal taste at the end of the day. Never thought about the sock affecting the shock's performance though so I'll keep an eye on it. I'll look to get a few more pics taken later. All the best, Mark
Hi Bugs, Took a couple of pics when I got home this evening - apologies for the quality/glare but the sun was out (which is something of a rarity over here!) Hope this is what you were looking for: All the best, Mark
thanks for the pics mark, nevermind the glare, looks like you have great views (very jealous now). bugs
Multi Protection Part 3 Having bought the Rizoma crash bungs and water pump protector and been really impressed with the quality, I thought I'd give these a go: Here they are fitted to the Mutley Front Fork Protectors Next up it's the Swingarm Protectors....
Multi Protection Part 4 Excellent quality (they should be for what they cost!) and superb fit: Swingarm Protectors The cut-outs allow the protector to fit flush over the springs: Only my opinion but Rizoma really know how to make great kit that I think suits the overall look of the bike. Mark H.
Hi Mark, are the same MarkH ex KTM 950 owner from ADVrider that sold me a Renazco seat many years ago. If so hi mate and glad you like the Multi. Cheers Shaun
After recently writing off my Mutley (you may have seen the photos) I recently went back to recover a few extras I had added, given the bike slid down the road up a kerb and into a wall there was no fork bottom damage, no frame damage or swingarm/rear wheel damage also, the bars are that wide all of those parts seemed to be clear of the ground so it does make me wonder if there is any reason for frame/water pump and wheel protectors
Sorry to hear about your accident and you may have a point. However, can't speak for the Mutley but my off on a ZX10R (somersaults, slide, kerb, fence post then into me) trashed the bike except for the front forks and swingarm which were protected. Crash bungs saved the engine as well even though the frame was split in two. Had the accident occurred on the Mutley I don't think the bars would have provided the necessary protection to be honest given the forces involved (both clip-ons were sheered off on the ZX10R) but it all depends on the type of accident and furniture involved. I still think I like the idea of trying to protect the bike (even if it only gives me piece of mind :wink. All the best, Mark.
Hi - just bought my mutleym (2010 reg), and it is currently virgin in terms of additions. You mention "Rob" as the source of the cylinder head guard, but can you let me know more details? There are many Robs in the world. Thanks Simon
