899 Exhaust Valve James Closed Before Purchase

Discussion in 'Panigale' started by Echo, Apr 27, 2015.

  1. Hi all,

Your thoughts would be most appreciated, I purchased a second hand Panigale 899 three weeks ago form a dealer that at the moment won't be named. The bike wasn't running right from the first ride and felt as though is was lacking power even less than my old GSXR 600 K7, it was also making a strange winning noise in 3rd and 4th gear. It went in to a different dealer today to have a Termi slip on put on which I assumed would be a strait forward job no more than three hours, I received a call at 3pm today from the dealer putting the slip on on and the guy said have I been messing around with the exhaust and headers, of course I said no as I gave them the bike to do the job. The guy said to me that the exhaust valve was jamed shut and that it was completely shot to peaces and that there should have been an F1 warning light but there wasn't. I then said that's starnge as the bike has only 3k on the clock and I brought it three weeks ago from a main Ducati dealer, anyway I am being charged for an additional three hours labour due to them having to deal with this valve issue and I said isn't that under the warranty. He told me no because I was having a race slip on put on. I called the dealer who I purchased the bike from and they said they didn't know of the issue and started to Blair it on Ducati Silverstone as they were the original owners of the bike. There was also an issue with the bak wheel rubbing and the seals had gone. All in all my Ducati experience so fare has been seriously shit and it seems that none of the dealer want to take any responsibility. I have contacted Ducati direct andthey are going to look I to it. Any help or thoughts would be great.
    Cheers

  2. Three hours labour for sorting out the exhaust valve seems excessive as it only has to be turned to the open position where it will stay permanently,in any case you are right it should be a warranty issue, but imho if it was not running right from day 1 you should have taken it back to supplying dealer

  3. Yeah your right I should have brought it to the dealer I purchased it from, I called them a few times and they said it was tyer noise and said got to the dealer where I was having the pipe fitted and they could give me an idea of what it is or was. The valve was apparently forced in the closed position and they had to drill it open and that's waht apparent,y took three hours. Me being from a non technical background would have no idea how long it should or would take even if the valve was closed, feeling a little let down and. I pleat,y turned over by both dealers. Have connected with Ducati directs MD and will see what he ses. Will take it as fare as I can and won't rest until they foot the bill

  4. valve would only need opening, and cable disconnecting. either way, sounds bollox from where im standing.
you should have been given an option to view the valve before work commenced, they cant charge you without your authority to do the work.
Some garages work this way to make lots of extra money. tbf, you should have taken it to your ducati dealer for the slip ons to avoid the third party issues you now have (sorry if that sounds useless)

yeah I kinda messed up by not bringing it to the original dealer who I purchased it from, the dealer who has it now and who has done the work only called me after the work was done and then was really weird with me when I said I was going to call the dealer I puchased it from and asked me to keep them out of it, seems like um getting tucked up by both deals heather of which seem to care about customer satisfaction. I'm REALY quite gutted to say the least as I spent literally my savings on this bike to be let down once I haded the money over. I have made contact with senior Ducati direct people and will hopefully get some sence from them if not I'll have to take it legal and wast more money and time.. I'm such a happy chappy today

  9. chances are if the valve was stuck either way it hasn't only just happened.......where did you get it from?

  11. how many miles has it done?

  12. No idea, just told that the seals were rubbing and had to be replaced, will have the full bill tomorrow when I pick the bike up and will have a full conversation as to what was wrong and what has been done and what I am being billed for step spy step, I will post the findings tomorrow

  13. Just to clarify, was the Termi fitted by a Ducati dealer or indie ?,if it was a indie and they have butchered the valve i think you will have a hard job making a claim.I know some of the multi owners have had there exhaust valves repaired/replaced under warranty.

  14. I was wondering who James was for ages - get it now, a typo :)

  15. Yep the exhaust was fitted by a Ducati dealer just not the dealer who I purchased the bike from who was also a Ducati dealer

  16. 4200 and it was on 3600 when I purchased it three weeks ago

  17. Look on the bright side at least it will go like a proper 899 now,not quite as fast as a 1199 but about the same as a 848 but with less midrange :Angelic:

  18. 4200
yep had a custom map as the original map wasn't with the pipes even though it was supposed to be be, what an expensive day... Still have to keep smiling lol... Looking forward to picking it up tomorrow and forgetting the hundreds-thousands-more thousands and riding please be sunny
