I have to say my enthusiasm for the track has been fired by @scrawnsenior and his posts about the Ducati TriOption Cup. Whilst I do not aspire to that level of competition, I am intrigued by just how difficult it would be to get an ACU license for club racing. There is a fair bit of stuff on the internet but I'd appreciate someone's first hand experience of the classroom and basic rider training to understand what the starting level has to be. Thanks, Andy
It's fairly simple. you need an eye test. A form A quick/half day, classroom session usually in Rugby but can be at a trackday sometimes. As for levels of ability...they vary massively. Have a look into the Desmo Due series for novice entry... Basically you'd want to be at the sharp end of Inters or better ideally on trackdays.
It's a bit harder now weeksy. You have to prove competence and your bike lucena isn't enough afaik do you just do classroom test and on track assessment. Senna has been doing them for Hottrax. Easy enough for you Andy. Do tests Eye test (incl info in form) Form to club Join club They sanction and send to acu Plastic arrives in post Makes track days a lot less hassle too
I think there is benefit to doing the class room training and basic rider assessment regardless of whether I take it any further or not. I also think the comment about track days is very important. Thank you gentlemen . Andy
I did mine last year and now race with NGRRC so I'm fairly informed. As said its now a day course the morning involving classroom session on race day routines, bike safety/scrutineering, race entry routine and various other bits and pieces. The afternoon involved taking your bike through a race start/ race routine. So basicly going from the holding area in pit lane to the start line, then sighting lap and onto the race start. I did mine at Castle Coombe which was run by NGRRC and the CC instructors. It's a piece of piss to pass but it does give you a good insight into what to expect. Do it and go racing, it's a great buzz even pottering around at the back is still awsome. There's also a great fell to the paddock which is so much more that TD's. As Weeksy says you'll need a sight test but no medical unless your over a certain age (which I can't remember) I was 49 when I did it and did not need one. You'll also need to a member of a club to get your licence from the ACU.
Well as you mention it, I only started racing in 2012 and when I did I put some words and pictures up on my tumblr to explain exactly what you needed to do back then. It's not changed that much but I believe it is compulsory to do an on track assessment now. Simple enough though. Here's a link to my original post on tumblr from back then: Scrawn #22 - Licence test day Also a link to what it cost me initially but be warned. If you do take the plunge and go racing then it's so addictive you will not want to stop. Scrawn #22 - The cost of racing..... If you need anymore advice you know where I am and my tumblr from back in 2012 contains lots of race reports to give you a feel for what it's all about. I try and include feelings and other factors in my words rather than just the actual racing, gives an idea of what to expect. Dave
Were you at Cadwell Park a couple of weeks ago? I was there, being "pit bitch" for my mate who's started racing with NGRRC this year in his orange bib.
Yep, I was there, was my first race of the year, managed to get two signatures towards my licence so with last years Thruxton that leaves me 7 to go. What cat was your mate racing in, I was in mini twins?
He's in Pre-Injection 700s. His first races (ever), as he'd crashed there at a trackday a few weeks before, and neither he nor his bike had been in a fit state for Brands. I didn't get to see much else, I was busy helping him out (mostly trying to stop his gazebo from flying away). I don't think I can make any of the other meetings, they're all way too far away from the Frozen North...
Was getting fed up with the wind battering my tent and gazebo, great days though. If you do make any of the 'softee Southern races' give us a shout.
Blimey! It has tightened up since I got my ACU licence........ Applied for licence...... Had eye test..... Novice Licence arrived with Rules and orange Novice 'Jacket'...... Jumped onto outfit first time on a practice day...... Second time it was a race....... Race completed.........Got signature on Licence.... Repeat 5 times (or was it 10?) Won a few trophies. Applied for full licence..........Threw away Novice Jacket (actually I still have it). Full Licence arrived.....Won some more trophies.
Bloody right I hung on, otherwise this happened....... But I did drive once or twice, y'know........ But why don't you go and chat to a few outfit racers and see if they will let you have a turn as the monkey............?? Just as well Jeff Loveland isn't racing anymore........I believe he had something like 9 passengers in one year.............and he won trophies left, right and centre, while one of passengers got a broken arm IIRC.
Many, many years ago I used to drive a 250cc go kart and I rode in the sidecar of a grand old British combo. If I learnt one thing, it's that fear is brown and runny. The chances of me participating in a modern sidecar event are about as much as me emulating Arnie and becoming pregnant :Chicken:. Andy
I used to do some work with a world champ passanger, trying to remember his name...two years running with the woodward blokey...mental. Give it a miss thanks, I can hurt myself enough, I dont need help
What? You mean you and your bulk can't hold down a couple of wheels at the right time? Squuarkkk!!! (Short for chicky - chicky....chicken.....)
