Poor Idle And Cutting Out On 600ss

Discussion in 'Supersport (1974-2007)' started by Christian Giudice, Apr 30, 2015.

  1. Hi, I've got a 600ss that starts on the button perfectly with the choke fully on. Revs high for about 10secs and drops. Then has trouble idling before stalling completely.

First post for me a not that mechanically minded!! Any ideas as to what I should check and adjust first would be very gratefully received.

    Thanks in advance

  2. Hi Chris,
Welcome to the mad house, I'm sure the residents will be along. So a couple of starter questions, has this problem just started, or has it always done this.

Just to add some perspective, my 900 starts first time on full choke and idles at 3000 rpm. If I take it off choke it will exhibit the same symptoms you describe. Normally I adjust the the choke so it is idling around 2000 rpm for about a minute or as long as it takes to get my gear on. Even after this it still can be a bit of a pig trying to idle

  3. Hello and welcome to the mad house

My 600SS would need full choke no revs to start then bring it down to idle around 1500 while putting bike gear on same as MCR above
I would still need a bit of choke when taking off otherwise she would stall before she was warm

They hate over choking as well if I left mine on a little after taking off it was like riding a kangaroo!

I learnt to slip clutch a little to while keeping up the revs on cold start

  4. Hi, Thanks very much for your responses.

Unfortunately mine will just die after about 20 secs even with choke full on. The only way I can stop it stalling is to rev it as well!

    Cheers

  5. Does it ever run for any period long enough to get warmed up?

It seems like fuel starvation to me.......So is the fuel pump running when you switch the ignition on? It should be.
    If not check the fuse.

Also try opening the tank filler cap and then see if it keeps running.

If the filler cap makes no difference, I'm afraid you have to start looking at the fuel pump and the in-tank filter; plus the little filter in the fuel line T between the two carbs.

  6. It took me 4 years to sort the same problem, it turned out the one o ring was missing from the mixture screws (thanks for finding that Al) but I still had to strip rebuild the carbs twice more to sort the problem. Still not sure what it was exactly but my 750 is the same as young ducbirds when starting. Any carb work done on the bike, dunno jet, open air box, k&n, strait through zorst??

  7. They flood easily and stop with full choke and lots of revs

Cutting out and not starting was a mini problem for me as I was flooding my SS that the plugs had to be dried out a few times :Banghead:

  8. Ps thank you for the young ducbird

  10. you calling Viv a lumberjack? Re: stalling, as already said - you can only work your way through the usual suspects and total carb strip is a good place to start - so many things could cause this but I'll go for blocked idle mixture circuits/gummed up idle mixture screws this time.

  11. No a plank :D

  14. Getting back on track before this thread gets too wooden, sounds like if the engine is only running on the fuel in the float bowls. Which could suggest that the fuel filter is clogged. Do you know when the fuel filter was last changed? Can you hear the fuel pump running at all. It runs constantly in the back ground.
