Hi JH. Did you get the chance to try out your idea with your 6+. I'm about to try out a similar setup but was not sure if a direct connection from the SatNav power connector socket to the USB plug is a sound idea.
I ended up with one of these wired to the satnav feed Dual Double 2 USB DC-DC Car Converter Module 12V To 5V 3A 15W Power Adapter | eBay Works fine and gives me a spare USB for action cam charging and the 6 plus seems quite happy. I am going to reposition the iphone so that it goes above the bike clocks though as I keep looking down at the handlebars and it's not a good idea with all the deer that run out round my way. I traced back the existing mini USB port that the previous owner had there and it was a crappy full size car ciggy adapter that had corroded and rusted. I just cut that out and threw it. I should finally get the bike back today following its massive strop & engine rebuild. Can send pics if you need.
Blimey, that looks cheap. I'm already using the sat-nav feed for sat-nav power (how conventional), but I might wire in one of those as well to save me having to run power cables from the under-seat outputs up to my tank bag with a USB adapter. Have you done anything to protect the USB connectors from the weather?
I haven't, no. I have cable tied them to just under the yoke so they haven't gotten wet yet. When I reroute the iPhone to above the clocks, i'll possibly put the connectors in by the fuse box so that I have to open the lid to plug something in and it will be well protected from the elements.
Just to let u guys know I have the Zumo 590 and the USB connector will output 5V safe for phone charging. The USB connector only works wen the GPS is connected to the cradle this is due to the step down being part of the GPS unit. As for Tom Tom I dunno. My query is what are we unplugging to connect our satnavs to the specific lead as mine is straight to battery at the mo.
LH side by the fuse box there is a spare connector. This is an ignition only, switched, connector. Power only supplied when the bike is on. Most wire to that. Connecting your cradle direct to the battery isn't so bad though because it will not be drawing anything without the satnav unit itself being in the cradle.

It's free. It is a spare they put there for the ducati performance satnav but you can use it for anything.
That's for splicing to whatever you want to power up, I would suggest a relay unit from which you can power multiple items.

O I see the plug has two spare tails on it. I thought people were unplugging and just connecting the satnav up and leaving a random plug. What would be the issue with direct soldering to the spare tails? Besides the obvious inconvenience wen wanting to remove the cradle from the bike.
No problem at all. If you hook the satnav direct to those cables via solder, you can just unplug the connector if disconnecting. Just pop to your dealer to get a spare connector for if you ever want to hook something else up. They will be pennies
