overheating head gasket

  1. well its been a good couple of years and 17k miles mainly commuting fun riding times on the mts

last night bike temp got really high going through traffic and not calming down.

checked this morning water bottle reservoir was empty, topped it up, rode it to work.

temp hovered around 80-90 c (should be around 60-70) and kept slightly increasing, especially when speed lowered

also noticed power wasnt as peppy as normal...

obviously a problem, checked radiator for condition/left/right side even temp - all ok.

strange, called dealer, explained issue, they called back said may be a head gasket leak, water getting into motor...

oh dear, bike off the road, taking into dealer for investigation, still under warranty...will post what diagnosis/cure is...

    bugs :(

  2. Any water in the oil?

  3. Possible problem is the actual Cylinder heads - Mine were replaced at 22K miles (Mine is a July 2010 Model) as the bike started "using" water - about 1ltr every 500m, combined with difficult starting and lots of steam (looked like white smoke) out of the exhaust when it did fire up, which it always did eventually. There was also the lack of bite in the motor and it ran hotter than normal.
New heads sorted it out - all under warranty - and it means I miss a valve check service! They changed both heads and when they came off it was just the front one that had been steam cleaned inside.

BTW I still have the original Rad on the bike and that has been fine - So far - keeping everything crossed!

PS - I was told the head / heads had possible hairline cracks or the metal became porous? Heads went back to Italy for investigation, never heard anything further.

  4. What do you mean by "really high", Bugs?

  5. Me too!! Mine is a June 2010 bike

  6. +1

What does the oil look like in your sight glass? Does sound like its doing the above, blowing coolant into the combustion chamber...

  7. How olds the bike? Possible loose head stud nuts?

  8. Dropped it off

Running at 90's. Riding at 80 stabilises but dosent bring it down. Slowing, traffic takes into hundreds and fan on. Never gets below 88.

No leaks, rad looks fine, guy in snells said he can smell coolant when it got to above 105 guesses it's something inside.

Oil glass looks fine, although i noticed it, called dealer and took it in within I guess 100mls.

Bike is jul/aug 2010. 17 k miles, always serviced on time and nice 30 miles motorway commuting weekly.

Glad bought that 3rd yr warranty now.

Will post diagnosis/cure. Although it may be a couple of weeks as hols at the garage...

(also getting a lambada error every so often)

    Bugs
