The new pannier mounts are nicely styled under the grab rail and out of sight from above. The rear clip on the pannier is small and made of cheese. If you are touring you might want some big cable ties just in case. Dealer has been informed but I didn't want any of you getting stuck.
Sorry, I don't understand what you mean. What is "the rear clip on the pannier"? What would the cable ties be for? And why would you get stuck?
There are three mounting points for the pannier. Two at the top and one on to the foot peg mount. The rear of the top two is, in my opinion, poorly designed for the job and fragile. When you are removing panniers with the weight of your gear inside, it is tricky and, as I've already found out, very easy to break the rear mount It looks like it can be replaced as part of the removable locking system. But, most folks will only use panniers to get them far from home. If the same happens you'll need a fix to get you home. You'll still have two points of contact (front hook and foot peg) but some big cable ties might be the only solution to secure the rear mount. As before, I didn't want anyone to get stuck far from home.
A pal of mine with his brand new DVT broke his LHS rear upper pannier fitting. He cursed not having put the bike on its centre stand first. Any kind of twist and it is likely to fail. Splash's caution is very timely.
Bloody hell, this threads started me worrying about the panniers already and I haven't got it yet and what's this about the throttle lag :Arghh:
There is a tiny amount of throttle lag compared to my 2010, but it doesn't take much riding time to adjust to it as it really is marginal, imvho.
Cheers nsm3, perhaps I shouldn't read forums But I have read a few reports now criticising it. I'll have to make my own mind up after I have a test ride
it looks like the throttle lag is due to an error in the DWC and Ducati's already on it.. if you set it off the lag disappear. Now I wonder whether setting it to a lower lever may help..
DWC in sport mode is only on level 2. According to the manual this should allow wheelies but it doesn't. I didn't bother trying level one, I just turned it off. Do any other DVT owners have the same issue? Cheers.
Always recommend carrying some cable ties & gaffa tape in your top-box for odds-n-sods events! But if you are buying plastic panniers, I doubt that your going to be doing any major traveling. Aluminum panniers offer far more useful options (impromptu seating/food prep area) & far greater security too the possessions we carry. But i may be coming across as a bit of a pannier snob now. Good heads up Splash,...now have you got an image of the broken item??
Here you go. You can see the front "hook" is still full size and the absence of the same "hook" at the back. It broke right along the mould line! The design is fragile and more so for an awkward way of removing panniers. My previous K13 bavarian panniers were plastic but much more robust and a dodle to remove even when loaded.
Who tests these bloody designs FFS? Obviously no-one who rides a bike or actually uses them day to day.
It means we need to be careful with the panniers as I think they can easily say user error. This will avoid warranty.
There I was picking up my new multi dvt and the nice man at snells had instalłed the panniers. I told him I was putting them in the car so as I was telling him about the forum worries about the robustness of the rear pannier mount he took the panniers off. Yes you guessed it , the rear mount was broken. Luckily they had spare panniers and swapped the lock. Not a good sign my old ones lasted 5 years ! At least I won't have any hassle going forward about user error.
Thanks for posting as it shows I'm not a complete klutz, or at least not the only one. Mine broke when removing a loaded pannier. Presumably at Snells it was empty. The rear mount just isn't up to the job. It's a relatively small hook and slides back into a decreasing size slot. Then you have to lift the pannier and slide it forward again but, the larger size front seems to come out easier than the back. I'm not sure how you would reinforce as mine broke right along the angle. If I had my way I would cast or shape some aluminium and run it back inside the pannier and do away with all of the exposed plastic in the rear mount. I'd be curious to know whether it will become more brittle as the weather gets colder, but of course, that won't happen in Bologna.
If it's a replicable part then maybe they could be cast in metal? I wondered if you could run a couple small drill holes through and bond some metal rod in it? 3mm would be enough.
