1198 Engine Light Comes On And Dash Power Goes

Discussion in '848 / 1098 / 1198' started by Pavey, May 15, 2015.

  1. As title. When riding the small orange dash light comes on and the dash goes dim, and my indicators stop working.

Soon stops and goes back to normal. Funnily enough have just had the exact thing happen to my 749 and that was a break somewhere in the wiring loom that once moving happened.

Anyone had this before and could it be an easy fix, or is it the loom thing again (maybe)?

  2. Found my error code, 5.1 - battery voltage error. Does that mean a new battery?

  3. Regulator probably gone belly up.

    • Thanks Thanks x 1
  4. how's the starting/churning as normal? a voltmeter will tell you if regulator not working plus if it's serious you won't be able to run far with lights on as engine will run rough/cut out. The fact that the fault goes away could mean it's battery but as you said, connectors/intermittent connection somewhere can produce similar.

  5. Absolutely fine to start it, and runs well. I did just speak to a mechanic and he said maybe it just needs a good charge, and the dash going dark is the bike shutting things off to conserve battery power. Sound feasible?

I do mean to send you an ecu soon Chris to put your map on, mentioned before. :)

  6. Have a look at the R/R connector by the battery tray. Mine did this a few months ago and it was the rectifier which had burned out.

  7. love it  I could be wrong as i'm sure it's coming/already arrived but I don't think your bike is capable of doing a sequential shutdown a la 2001 - A Space Odessey yet. When adequate current not getting through the parts that draw the most current usually tell you first (as said). Quickest way to rule out any doubt is to treat yourself to a good multimeter as they are only around £5 - 10 for a decent one now.

  8. you do get cars going in to low battery status. switches certain function's off but not when charging.

  9. ^ thought so - we won't even have to twiddle the steering wheel soon

  10. sure you will still find the time. :Angelic::smile:.
check charging, but sounds like another earth fault.

  11. Was the r/r in the end, changed under warranty. Just been for a quick blast, man that thing is loud :)

  12. i bet there will be no problem with the charging......usual back street intake of breath and at least £250 quid.....

  13. aye, and the rest. don't get much for 250 theses days.
    expensive things workshops. :Greedy:
