1200 Strange Tinkle

Discussion in 'Multistrada' started by jcmental, Jun 7, 2015.

  1. I've been out on the bike a few times this week end, but un like usual I've been riding "Gently" and it's left me a bit puzzled.
I have a strange metallic rattling noise coming from somewhere above or around the front of the engine / fork yoke, it's very faint but I keep hearing it. It seams to happen more when I'm using the engine braking or high in the rev range 8k+ the bike has done 12750 miles and I'm currently saving up for it's 15k service. She rides fine but I have noticed the engine feels a bit err..... vibrate'y through the foot pegs and bars a bit like the timing is to advanced, it's hard to describe but I was wondering if it could be caused by a broken valve stem? and it's that that I can hear rattle. I've looked all over the bike and cant find any thing lose enough that makes the same rattle.

Anyone had a similar noise or have any ideas what it might be?
I have noticed that when I do open it up the front wheel doesn't come up like it normally does.

Also what sort of price should I expect to pay for a 15k service?

  2. Regarding the heading....it comes with age...normally 3-4 times at night.

  3. £1000 ish...

Check the rear sprocket cush drives aren't eating the swinging arm.
Have you checked the head race bearings?

  4. Yep there all fine, even checked the anti vibration plates on the brake pads.

  5. I think you would notice more than a strange tinkle if it was a broken valve stem

  6. Is it the Ohlins fork rattle?

  7. You don't hear the Ohlins fork rattle at speed. It only tends to be audible at slow speed over bumps.
If you're in no hurry for your belt service, pick your time. Some dealers are a bit slack over the winter and will charge lower labour rates to get business in. I was quoted £850 in the summer and nearer £750 in the winter.

  8. I have Sacs suspension and I'm sure it's more to do with the engine or may be the radiator area. £850 sounds more like I was exspecting After recent events I don't think DMC moto will give me a good rate. But I'm going to give them a ring and see what they say.

  9. My 15000 was £800, but that was a year ago. 30000 was the same but had belt pulley issues which made a strange high speed warbble noise. As belts were getting damaged by scabby pulley surfaces.

  10. Sorry to crash the thread, what is the Ohlins fork rattle?
I've been getting something rattling from the front of the bike when I hit a pothole or manhole cover at lower speeds (well I can hear it at lower speeds, it might happen at higher ones as well).

I thought it was loose body work, the front mudguard or the screen, as this wobbles a fair bit, but everything seems really tight and it's really bugging me!

  11. Chris, the Ohlins fork rattle is when the shimming of the fork internals isn't right, I had it on my 2010 MTS, mainly noticed it at slow speeds on slightly rough terrain, is was part of a technical bulletin around 3 years ago, difficult to describe the noise really just sounds like something is loose. P&H should be able to help you.

  12. Front end noise... Bulletin 844 or something else?

This is a well known problem on the 2010-2013 S models with Ohlins forks.
As RR says it's sorted by shimming or as a last resort replacement of the affected fork leg. Search for the above thread.

  13. Pinking?
    Otherwise known as pre-ignition...

  14. get it checked, at least take it to a dealer for them to have a listen, possibly drop the oil and check your sump plug for metal fragments.

  15. Again, sorry to thread hijack, mine was due to loose head bearings apparently.

  16. Pinking can sound like tinkling. It's when the mixture fires by itself before the plug ignites it. It can be caused by overheating or when you get incandescence inside the cylinder head due to carbon deposits getting red hot or because of too high a compression or too low an octane fuel.

  17. Yeah I'm sure it's not pinking. Pinking normally happens when the engine is under load i.e. Up a hill in the wrong gear. I'm going to knock up a big silencer so I can hear the engine properly and hopefully pin point where the noise is coming from. My bike runs at 68° on a hot day so no sign of over heating, in fact the only time it's been over 100° was when I was up the alps in a traffic jam.
I'm going to phone around to day and get a few prices for my service, and if my huge silencer don't help find the cause ask them to check it out.
It's like a repair washer rattling on a piece of stud iron noise, that's the only way I can describe it, but I can hear it over the mivv exhaust with my scaler playing AC/DC and my ear plugs in, so it must be loud.

  18. I'm celebrating, I found the cause of the tinkle well 2 causes as it happens, the main noise was from a missing bolt in my front left hand side crash bar, I worked my way around the bike from front to back top to bottom and found I had to punch the crash bar quite hard (like it was the Mrs) to get it to make the noise but it was defo that. I've fitted a new bolt and also washers and spring washers in the hope it wont vibrate out again.
I also found the right side mounting bolt for the sump guard was tight but the rubber cushion was very lose, this was letting it rub against the lower section of the sump guard. I've put a washer on the trop hat bit of the rubber mount to tighten it up a bit.
    Happy bunny now.
and I'm thinking the vibration I could feel was just the paranoia of me looking for something in the engine fucking up. or it could be something to do with that high octane fuel I used from the shell garage.

Any how thanks for all your suggestions sorry but thankful they were wrong.

  19. Glad you got it sorted, always a good feeling. I'm happy mine was nothing more serious than the head race bearings.

Of course now it's been done I'm convinced it's got a high frequency tingle through the bars and footrests that wasn't there before...!

  20. I've had that rattling mentioned above, on the front of my Ohlins bike for 5 years - always thought it was the carbon mudguard!
