Did the age old accident today. Tried to ride off with a disc lock in!! Safe to say the rotors aren't that strong! It's bent to crap and warped the disc. 550 miles and new disc please!! My own stupid fault.
Sorry to hear that - bad luck but, as you say, you're not the first. Not sure if you use these or not but it's stopped me from riding off on more than one occasion: I always put the corded end over the front brake lever and use two to get the necessary length so there's no over stretch. It takes less time to fit than putting the actual disc lock and well worth it imho.
Bit late now but you may want to fit a RoadLok device to save this happening again European Sportbikes | ROADLOK I have one on my s
Thankfully mudguard is fine. Just the angles and dead flies!! Ordered new disc (£318!!!) and due tomorrow from bologna, hmmm. Fingers crossed!!!
Look on the bright side, at least you didn't fall off, or worse. I use a Xena series xx14 disc lock. It's one of the alarmed ones which triggers when you lift the bike off the sidestand, or roll it off the Centrestand. You cannot fail to hear the alarm! Just me, but I don't like the visual reminders, as it would be easy for some cheeky chappy to remove/hide it for a laugh...
Scarman my bright yellow disc lock has an alarm too. Didn't stop me pulling forward, slowly in first gear thinking scruffy geezer standing next to me holding a set of van keys, looking at his van next to me was trying to sort out his van alarm. Double doh. New mudguard for me though :Banghead:
Ouch, I guess there is no fail proof method really then. I liked the idea of the ROADLOK mentioned further up the thread, but £200 is a lot of money, but obviously cheaper than a new rotor and mudguard.
I have never ridden off with the lock still attached. Yet! As memory weakens, I am well aware this becomes ever more likely to happen one day. What I try to do is to ingrain a fixed habit: when I get back to the bike, always unlock first of all, i.e. before fiddling with luggage, helmet, or anything else. Provided I stick to that habit automatically, I won't make the mistake.
The easiest way would be not to use it and just rely on the Tracker Monitor!!! No chance of disc lock damage again! To be honest I think it's not having a key now that tripped me up. As when I start the RSV4 you can't miss the disc lock key swinging with it!! Ah well. School boy error by a school boy!!
Not the only one PP tho mine was on a 990 Superduke, late out for a ride jumped on bike, first gear, roll forward, stop, tip over, broke gear lever on kerb but saved bike from going down and no disc damage......I didn't make the ride......oh and I had the reminder cable on Have moved the Mutley with the lock on....... and it had the cable on My excuse I have to park it uphill with the lock around the other side of the bike when I come out to it AND the bit that goes round the handlebars is black just like the grips, :Angelic: Still not as bad as one Harley guy, two up and loaded who pulled away...to only tip over with one rather loud and expensive crash
In a slightly similar vain, on a GS 750 Suzuki pulled over to a lay-by on the opposite side of the road, parked the bike and put the steering lock on (it used the same key as the ignition but was half way down the head stock) with the handlebars to the left. Finished whatever I was doing and headed back to the bike, got back to the bike and started it up, put helmet and jacket on, got on put it into gear then accelerated away doing a u turn back in the opposite direction to which I'd came, which was ok until I tried to straiten out ! What a twat !
