749 Cracked And Broken Rear Sprocket Carrier

  1. Thought you might enjoy (or not) seeing this.

I was getting 'snatching' a lot more than usual at Jerez so I tightened my chain... Getting back I dropped it in for a quick check up and this happened when they removed the rear sprocket...

When I converted the swingarm to the black box type I also changed the rear sprocket to a larger 41 tooth with a new chain. I think at 99 links the chain was too short (should be 100 or 101) and was always too tight - I had to have it a bit tight for the tyre to clear the swingarm. That has put pressure on everything but overtime the chain has stretched and things seemed normal - clearance to the swingarm was fine...

That is until the point where the snatching became annoying and I tightened the chain again which has clearly put pressure back on the whole drivetrain again and ... Well... That happens...

Close call, new carrier installed, chain properly tensioned but a warning to those changing their swingarm...

  2. How tight was your chain?!? :Wideyed:

  3. It's something I've been paranoid about for a while and always tried to adjust so it was never 'too tight'. The old, 'bike on the stand 20mm of play at the centre of the chain', measurement but I'm sure mine was looser than that at Jerez. I could hear the chain rattling off throttle in corners for instance (or what I thought was the chain). The snatching just got too much though so I put it back to the 20mm spec but clearly I have aggravated an old injury... lucky.

  4. 41t rear!...do you know what size front sprocket you running 14t or 15t? Immense stress there.

  5. It's a standard front (15 I think) but could be a 43 rear - I thought 41 was standard..? I'll check tomorrow anyway...

  6. I reckon that was damaged by somebody trying to remove the Cush drive pins. They are reverse thread so somebody may have mullered them trying to remove them in a normal anti clockwise direction when in fact they were tightening the buggers up!
I found one cracked on my 749 soon after I bought it when I'd never even touched the Cush drive pins.
Or...it could have been the additional load due to 138bhp...
