Which Dyna coils for 900 sl / ss engines ?

Discussion in 'Supersport (1974-2007)' started by sim900sl, Aug 30, 2012.

  1. Well whilst I'm contemplating buying FCR41's for my SL , I'm thinking of uprating the coils to Dyna, quick question is what colour Dyna coils do our Dukes run ?

I fitted these before to some of my Suzooks , and have a spare Green one , coil not Suzook.

    Thanks

    Simon

  3. I seem to rember a similar question was posted on the old site. I believe opinion was split on the 3 ohm and 5 ohm suitability, and I do know the Chris of CA Cycleworks fame said the difference was down to what colour the original coils were.

Drop Nogaromill999 a PM, as Dave I think stocks the 5 ohm Dyna Tek coils and I know he has run his 900 SS on these without issue.

  4. Been using 5 ohm Dynateks on my SS for years ..... really smooths out throttle response in the lower (<3k) rev range. Don't forget to open up the plug gap (up to 60 thou on standard NGK plugs) or there's no point in having the upgraded coils !

  5. Which version of the 5ohm coils do you run as I believe there are 2 vesrions with differnet secondary resistance.

  6. I used the smaller Dyna coils (Dynatek) with twin outputs, no problems at all and fits in standard position easy. i used 3 ohm versions.

  7. DC10-1's with single outputs - they are slightly larger than stock so needed shafts cutting and mods to the bracket, but nothing more than a 5 minute job. Like most, I also fitted better HT leads at the same time (in my case 8mm magnacors that I had in the garage).

  8. Hang fire on these.... (pun not intended...)

Have just swapped back to my original coils - my bikes recent plug eating antics are down to the coils being knackered - brand new plugs will fire good even at low voltage, failing when run in due to the shagged coils...

Am currently in the middle of a WTF email convo with C/cycleworks.

  9. I'll be hanging fire ! in fact I wont be ordering a bean from CA cycleworks ! , was going to spend around $1700 on bits , but found them pretty un helpful re FCR 41 jetting , snet me a link to Sudco ! bizzare.
I thought these guys were supposed to be experts in their field.

  10. I have a lot of data with jetting sizes for fcr's, also you could try Sam Roberts at SPR Racing. PM me if you need any base figures.
After setting the baseline i dialed them in at the above dyno, took about two hours and is now spot on apart from slightly weak at 10k (13:1), i have tried everything and cannot get to the bottom of this but 10k, who cares!

  11. Right Simon, Dyna coils are 3 ohm single output.

    FCR 41 Baseline settings:
    mixture screw 3/4 turn
    Slow air screw 1 - 1/2 turns
    Float height 9mm
    Mainjet 155
    Main Airjet 200
    Slow jet 60
    Needle EMT
    Needle clip 3rd from top
    Idle speed 1200

    Hope this helps.

  12. A good set of baseline figures, personally i found slow / idle jet to be 45 and main to be 165-170, imo. this does vary depending on location / fuel, it also depends on short or long msnifolds.
sev, were you on short or long?
i did spend a lot of time trying to get the idle correct and found around 1300 to be the best balance, i would like to find a way to get this down. i also found that with any bigger idle jet than 45 i had to compensate too much with the idle screw being too far in, it then was hesitant with pickup.

  13. Spike, I'm on standard fcrs rather than splits and the long intake manifolds. The baseline settings were the ones which cycle works supplied and yes mine idles more towards the 1300 mark, well, between 1200-1300.
other than the idle mixture screw I've never touched the carbs otherwise.

  14. After a little email tennis with Cycleworks, they are sending me a new pair of coils as the old ones are in warranty!

No fuss, no returning-the-old-ones, all good!

  15. Possible numpty question now, so please be gentle with me. Is it possible to fit stick coils, as per most modern jap bikes, to a Ducati? Just wondered as there was a recent article in Practical Sportsbikes about converting older bikes to stick coils and what an improvement they were.

  16. YOU NUMPTY! No really, there are some coil sticks with a short lead, you could fit those but whats the point, or benefit, the dyna coils (whichever ones) are good enough with a decent set of leads and plugs, on early bikes with the twin plug setup its difficult enough tho get the plug cap in.
So what were the benefits quoted? i bet they did not mention that after about five years of work the corrosion gets to the coil stick and bursts it open , this gives a real headache as you have a right good time trying to get them out of the cylinder head.

  17. Im thinking they were on about the four-valvers, a 2v motor would look strange with stick-coils? A 4v motor you could hide them down the plug tunnel.
