Fellow ducatisti, So here i go: I have a ducati 749s and i love to ride it! But i have a little problem, the lady of the house complaines about the discomfort when riding duo. So i'm looking at an extra bike (second hand, not to expensive about 5000 euro) (belgium, known from beers and chocolate ). I looking for something that still will be enjoyable to ride alone, maybe to start some home/work trips and is comfy for the duo. So i'm thinking about an older multistrada or one of the first hypermotards. What is your experience with the hyper/ multistrada as for duo riding ?
Hi MVC, I`ve previously owned an old aircooled multi and tried both bikes solo and with a pillion when I was choosing and I think the multi is the better of the two with a passenger. Mind you the old multi is even uglier than the current one so try not to look at it if you get one.
I think the newer multi isn't that bad. The older, yeah what can we say it's practical . But i see some modifications online that i like. Maybe i can do something like this (should look great next to my 749s Some look great Also other brands/models (monster?) can be taken in consideration, i also like the dorsoduro 1200, ktm 990/950 sm or the SM-T. Maybe even a 4 cyl :Nailbiting: (did i just say that ?).
Some improved Multis there, at least they don't all make your eyes hurt when you look at them. I had an 1100 Monster, that was my favourite of the aircooled multi, hyper, monster range but also not great with a pillion. I currently have a Superlight which is only a single seat anyway so a couple of years ago I bought a Moto Guzzi 1200 Sport for touring and carrying the Mrs. It is absolutely brilliant at that. Well, to be more specific , it is extremely heavy and does not handle or steer with Ducati like precision but it is very comfortable, full of character, makes me smile all the time and surprisingly quick and agile for such a fat bike, bit like watching a hippo run if you know what I mean. Give one a try, you may like it.
For me it is important that the bike feels "light" and agile, when we go touring it are going to be day-trips, not week-long journeys, since i live in belgium and we don't have the best roads, it will have to deal with a lot rough surface roads, tight bends, speed bumps,...
From what you have said and with the price you can pay then probably the old multi is best especially if you can make it look nicer as in the pictures above. I`d probably go for the 1000 over the 1100 if you will be carrying a passenger a lot as while it is a little lower on power and torque it is a smoother engine so nicer power delivery .
Depends how big you are (and your wife - no offence) my friend has a dorso 1200 and its a big bike but then he is (6'3" and 18 stone) - he sat on my hyper 1100 and dwarfed it...ive been on the back of my own hyper and its quite comfortable, went from Bristol to wales last year ironically to pick up his dorso, he's a lot bigger than me so it made sense for me to be on the back... Sold my hyper a few months back to get a zed 1ooo but ill be getting another hyper soon I think - another 1100 as well...
Im normal i think 5'10" and 11 stone, with a muscular build, she is little, 5'3" and 9 stone max. So that's why i like a bike that feels,steers nimble and great around twisties and little corners. I think i will testdrive a dorso, a hypermotard, a multi; maybe an ktm sm or sm-t (but i don't like the orange color), other suggestions welcome guys, causing i don't know a lot about touring, good pillion bikes. It will have to be fun and give a bit of comfort for the passenger.
hyper 1100 it is then....get the sp while youre at it....chop chop, off you go and don't post back until you've got pics also...
get an old multi, way cheaper and as much of a hoon bike as a hyper, you just miss the stopping power. The motor is mental
I did think about getting an old multi (newer shape) and minimalising everything to make it more supemoto looking.... Chickened out and bought another hyper... Sent from my SM-P900 using Tapatalk
5ft3 9 stone ? Any pictures of your wife ? Only joking. I actually like the look of the old multi. I remember one of my first visits to the Ducati factory and the staff bike park was full of them , on the local mountain roads they made perfect sense , I'd love to own one, do they do an s version . Ohlins , brembos, termis , yum yum.
